Unfortunately the knock-on effect of these sort of charges is that there will be more people on the road with low tyre pressure which could be a factor in accidents and loss of life.

IMO government should make it mandatory for every petrol pump to have a free air pump that is maintained regularly, even if it means the cost is passed on to the customer.

It wouldn't be free then would it and that option already exists at the pump station

In my town I would choose to go and fill up at the one which offers free air.

I bought a foot pump, but it broke. I've now bought another.

So the cost will be passed on to me despite never using them. No thanks.

Having once worked for a well known retailer I can safely say it spent more time out of action when it was free than it ever did when they charged 20p for five minutes.

Unfortunately not everyone is as careful, or indeed cares, and they cost money to maintain. So, I might be alone in thinking it, but the minority have ruined it for the majority.

Won't make any difference. The "car operators" (can't call them motorists) who don't check their vehicles aren't going to check them whether the air's free or not.
Sooner cars are all electric, have a "no user serviceable parts" label on the bonnet, and have non pneumatic tyres the better. And then they'll run the batteries flat.

Indeed. If it came with the car, does anyone even remove it from the glove box? (Except to read it, and then put it back).

I've had several fail, the modern ones are rubbish. If you're mechanically minded and fancy a small project, next time it breaks, have a look at a vintage one off Ebay.

"Kismet Duplex Master", "Kismet Junior" or early Dunlop ones - these things are built like battleships. Mine won't just outlive my car, it'll outlive the internal combustion engine, we'll all be driving EVs before this thing fails.

I did intervene and direct the lady to the car handbook.
It's often on the side of the driver's door too.
