Dubrovnik

Morning all,

My wife and I are off to Dubrovnik for 4 days soon to celebrate her 40th.

Just looking for recommendations for things to do / places to eat and drink etc.

Looking to do the city walls walk after 6 pm to avoid cruise ship crowds, other than that anyone that's been recommend things or places they enjoyed visiting....

Many thanks
Lee

    Walk the city walls.
Cable car up to the top of Srd hill, I would also recommend booking a table at Panorama restaurant for lunch whilst you are up there the views are stunning also visit the Dubrovinik war museum whist there.
There is a couple of hidden rock bars on the outside of the city walls, great for a relaxed drink, One is called Buza bar I can't recall the name of the other.
War Photo limited is another great place to visit a real eye opener.
Whilst we was there we hired a jet ski from garitransfer.com for a half day and was great fun visiting the surrounding islands and little hidden beaches.
We also did a game of thrones tour which was really fun if that's your thing.
Lokrum island is also a nice day out.

Restaurants, the best meal we had was at Nautika, 360 was also very good.

Its a great city, one of my favourites, I just returned form Split on Monday and I much preferred Dubrovnik. Have a great time.

Cable car is currently closed due to an ongoing dispute between the City of Dubrovnik and the operator over unpaid taxes. Check trip advisor forums for latest information.

That said it is worth going to the top of Srd for the view and a drink/lunch at the restaurant. It’s a long walk though and not that easy in summer heat. You can get a taxi or Uber though. The fort at the top has a small museum about the war in 1993 which is interesting.

The boat over to Lokrum island is good. The island is a nature reserve, not a great deal there but it’s lovely for a chilled out walk around away from the hustle and bustle of the old town. Get the main Lokrum island boat from the old harbour as it includes entrance to the island. If you use one of the smaller water taxi companies then you have to pay for entrance onto the island as well.

Another recommendation is a trip to nearby Cavtat. Can be done by bus/taxi/boat. I’d recommend the boat, takes about 45 mins and there’s a number of companies doing it from the old town harbour. The boat ride itself is interesting as you see a number of abandoned holiday resorts along the coast. Cavtat is a nice harbour village to spend a few hours.

Look up the Dubrovnik cruise terminal schedule and try to plan your activities around that. Some days may only have one cruise ship, some days may have four! Those days are the days to avoid the old town!

The city walls aren't anywhere near worth the now extortionate cost.

We went last year (August) - Have to say, stupidly expensive. All Game of Thrones & Star Wars stuff.

Within the walls was virtually all restaurants & gifts shops, out side a bit cheaper

Yep, good advice about the cruise ship schedules - I've cruised into Dubrovnik several times and don't go anywhere near the City if there are more than two ships in, unless they're small ones. Very easy to check online. Most weeks in high season there's a day or two when there are fewer ships in port.

We’re going to Cavtat on Tuesday and have used this predictor to gauge when it will be less busy to travel to Dubrovnik

    The cable car is open
We’re looking at going to Mostar
There is an island that’s a nature reserve
Hiring a boat for an afternoon.
Venice is an option for you, we’re not as been already.

We were looking to go to Dubrovnik this September for our anniversary, but after quite a bit of research and looking for decent accommodation we sadly chose elsewhere as the prices have gone sky high due to the Game of Thrones popularity at the moment.

Now we both love GoT, and that was even part of the reason we considered the destination, however it seems that lots of fans are willing to pay far more for the experience than we are.

It looks like a wonderful city though and I would love to visit it in a good few years once the current mania has died down.

Most disappointing place ever for us.

Ruined by cruise ship crowds. Almost every shop selling tourist tat.
