Banks under the banking code have to send you a letter telling you they are going to close your account.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
HSBC closed my current account a few months ago; similar story to OP's.
ATM swallowed maestro card, called customer services, account had been closed.
I had about £1650 per month going in account, same going out I must say, but no missed DD payments or over OD limit.
I received no previous warning at all, and have had no correspondence from them since. I'm still in posession of chequebook for example... Should they not ask for this back?
Banks?!
(Fortunately I have another current account, others may not be so lucky.)0 -

Odd behaviour which you can actually complain about and demand monetary compensation if you have any losses.

When HSBC closed an account I wasn't actually using they wrote me a letter. They did wait until my card was out of date to do this though and didn't ask for anything else back.
*The link is 2 years old but the banking code still standsI'm not cynical I'm realistic

Abbey closed ours even though we were in an agreement to pay back overdraft monthly and we had not defaulted on the agreement. Just before paying the 3rd payment we got a letter that they had passed it to debt collection agency for the rest of the overdraft.
No warning, no letter and when we called them they could not discuss it as they no longer had the account.0
