There is no dilemma here, go back and pay for the meals you had. Nothing is free in life, but common decency costs very little!

If you're a miser or genuinely seriously skint accept their generosity (but then how can you afford to eat out anyway).
If you can afford it, pay up. Small businesses and pubs are going bust on a daily basis. If it's part of a big chain you may think - "so not a small business" - but their bosses will be giving them a hard time over the deal.
Put yourself in their position. Imagine still having to pay for the costs: food, staff, overheads but losing the day's takings and then the stress of their pet's problem and a vet's bill (even if insured the premium will go up next year).
Poor guy's between a rock and a hard place, your what £15-30 a head (North of England) is affordable - and it is otherwise why are you there at all? pay up.
If as a society we don't help each other out in times of genuine need then we are no longer a civilised society.

No 'probably' about it.
You don't know whether they had insurance or not.
Not everyone has pet insurance.
We always chose to self-insure our cats.

If so, offer to pay next time you go back - you can work out roughly what the bill would have been by looking at the menu. If the landlord declines - maybe offer a charitable donation.

If not - and you don't intend to eat there again in the near future - take them at their word that it was on the house.

Of course you should offer to pay, especially if it is your usual pub.
Vet bills are expensive and your meal cost will help pay if the dog was seen by a vet.
Please don't try and profit because someone panicked when their pet was taken ill.

There will be a lot of people who will have enjoyed the free meal but if you are decent people of conscience, they will remember your gesture and appreciate it.

Good idea ,then it's up to them whether they cash the cheque or not.

As it's your local and I expect you go there a lot, I would definitely go back and ask how the dog is and then offer to pay for your meal, as that would be the decent thing to do.

Vet bills are so expensive - our rip off one charges £150 to go miles out in to the countryside and is a nightmare to find and isn't very good either!

Pet insurance is for mugs IMO

Have heard people say so many times that when the vet was doing the bill the people asked for a list of treatment given for insurance claim and all of a sudden vet bill went up by £350

Another one said, went in said got pet ins, vet said oh well we'll do this and this and this and this and that - it was endless, poor animal suffered and eventually after making an enormous amount of money, the illness was found and treated

Vets love pet ins - they rip off the companies for as much as they possibly can and more

We've always put money aside instead of putting to a disgusting ins company

When you make a claim they exclude that illness from future claims and put up premiums to an unaffordable amount
