How long should I leave Norton.

I have Norton internet security installed on my computer.
My year of updates expired on the 18th of this month.
They want £39.99 for another year of updates.
I am going to install one of the free virus programs.
How long would be a wise time to leave Norton installed, considering I updated everything in the programme few days before the expiry.

Thanks Ralph.

  • I would download your free AV and Firewall now, uninstall Norton, install your new lovely FREE AV and firewall programs and run them now. The sooner the better ;)

Why bother leaving it installed at all? Just download and install AVG Free (other free AV software is available) now and you can delete Norton and all of its resource-hogging add-ons!

Yes i would get rid of Norton now. Download your new firewall and anti virus but dont install them. Uninstall Norton , Run Ccleaner . Then install your 2 new programs. I always pull my modem wire out because for a short while you have no protection .
  • you should have got rid of norton aproximately 367 days ago...
  • if you have a modem, make sure the windows firewall is on before uninstalling norton.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Leave it alone forever.

I downloaded it as part of my BT broadband deal, nothing but trouble for a week and so I've gone back to zonealarm and kaspersky
Space for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though
  • Thanks all. I see Norton is not a favourite on this site.
I have used Norton for 8 years and never had a problem. However this year the subscription going up to £39.99 is a bit much. So I will take all your good advice and install the free one.

    Thanks all.

Can I just come in and hijack this thread for a few moments?!:o Hope no-one minds too much?;) :o

I have Norton on my machine, trial period has run out and I want to get rid of it. Have read the advise here so can I ask, what does someone like me do who has downloaded and installed both free avg antivirus and free spybot before uninstalling Norton??

    Thanks in advance ;)
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. :A
  • can i also attempt to hijack this thread and ask about these "free" AV and firewalls.

I have McAfee on a windows XP computer i use and really don't want to be paying for these resource hogging, intrusive programs like McAfee, Norton etc. that flash up messages every 5 minutes.

Can i just ask for a simple alternative solution. Which one program is the best. Free of course.

    Thanks.

Use AVG for your AntiVirus - And Comodo Firewall for your Firewall. Both are free and good.

I use NOD32 myself for AntiVirus its not free but not exspensive either and is one of the best AntiVirus there is. They have also just released a full security that includes firewall and Antivirus if you wish to go down that line.
Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best

Just because it's free don't mean it's good

    Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:

Just Because you read it some where don't mean it's right ;)
