Oak furnitureland and returns policy

Hi,
I received some items from Oak furntitureland today and although the majority of the furniture looks fine I have an issue with the dinning table.
I ordered this in-store but the sales person failed to mention I would need to construct the table myself. The legs/base needs to be attached to the table top. I was sort of expecting it to be delivered already assembled. I see on their website it does say this in the small print if you look closely but this was never told to me in-store.
Also the sales person and the website fail to mention the weight of the item. The table top (without the legs) comes in at 98kg or just over 15 stone, ouch. The deliver driver mentioned I would need 4 people to help put the table together. None of this was mentioned to me when buying the table and that makes it very hard for me to put the table together by myself. I can barely move the table top let alone lift it.
They do allow for me to cancel my purchase 14 days after delivery but it looks like they change £100 for the first item and £50 for the second. As the table legs were in a separate box its not clear if this counts as one item.
I would be happy to exchange the table for a smaller lighter one and ask them to refund the difference.
However I'm not sure of my rights here. I would say the table isn't fit for purpose because it weighs just too much and can't be constructed by someone on their own. I think its unfair I was sold a table without first being given all the relevant facts about how many people I would need to build it.
So apart from me thinking its unfit for purpose are there any other consumer rights that would protect me here and require Oak Furnitureland to exchange this item for something more sensible or just give me a full refund and come and take the table away?
I've only opened the box so far and haven't actually removed it from it as I just couldn't lift the damn thing so I can easily tape the box back up.
Thanks
Martin
It would be reasonable to expect the salesperson to tell you that the table was not fully assembled beforehand.
My suggestion, although I've not gone through the entire thread, would be to contact Oak Furnitureland and explain that you wouldn't have bought the table if you had been told about self-assembly - and you feel let down and dissatisfied.
Hopefully, they will realise that the salesperson did not advise you well and work to resolve the situation.
Good luck.0 -
I ordered this in-store ................. The table top (without the legs) comes in at 98kg
Surely you checked it for heft when you were in store.
Just turn the table upside down on the cardboard packaging, attach the legs and then if required get a couple of folk to turn it up the right way.
Sounds quite big so you must have friends or family you were expecting to eat with you to warrant a big table ask them round for dinner. Job done.
Anything else is just buyers remorse.0 -
Surely if the legs came attached you need the biggest door in the world to get it in?0

Having got a oak table and chairs not from there, I doubt many companies will send a complete dining room table because of the weight and difficultly for getting it through a door. Even our oak chairs that came with table are heavy. Personnel I would ask friends, neighbours, family for help. Maybe treat them after to a nice pizza and drinks as a way of a thank you assuming you can get anyone0

I purchased my oak dining furniture from a local independent retailer. Delivered free at the time promised and then assembled by them. And probably no more expensive than using a chain retailer.0

Thanks for the advice. I think i need to sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning.
I wouldn't recommend sleeping on it.
VERY hard.
You'd feel rather achy in the morning.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
A valid point has been raised above - how on earth would it fit in most people's houses if in one piece when delivered?
I know it'd never fit in any of the 3 houses I've had with the legs on.
Ultimately you only have yourself to blame here, it's just common sense that it'd come with some construction required due to the sheer size of the thing.0 -

I think the average person should assume if a dinner room table is coming in the post the legs would need to be attached.
I think Pinkshoes has the right answer but a few crates of beers would probably do the job.
You could ask them how it was clearly identified to you that assembly was needed as per their FAQ below
( this bit of FAQ makes the suggestion from other posters that you are stupid for not asking rather silly and you might have some rights against the credit card company on the basis that you should have been told and if you weren't it you could assume no assembly was required
)
My view is asking them to produce £50 for you to buy some beers to facilitate some help would be the way to go
Will I have to assemble the furniture myself?
At Oak Furniture Land the majority of our products are designed with no home assembly needed. However, to aid in delivery or to avoid damage, our designers have deemed it best that certain items may need a small amount of home assembly. This includes all dining, cots and beds and some wardrobes, occasional tables and sofa products. Any handles e.g. for drawers and wardrobe doors may be on the inside of the drawers and doors. Items needing assembly will be clearly identified to you prior to purchase. Our designers ensure that any assembly is as straightforward as possible and in no way detracts from the quality or structural integrity of the product.0
