Oak furnitureland and returns policy

Hi,

I received some items from Oak furntitureland today and although the majority of the furniture looks fine I have an issue with the dinning table.

I ordered this in-store but the sales person failed to mention I would need to construct the table myself. The legs/base needs to be attached to the table top. I was sort of expecting it to be delivered already assembled. I see on their website it does say this in the small print if you look closely but this was never told to me in-store.

Also the sales person and the website fail to mention the weight of the item. The table top (without the legs) comes in at 98kg or just over 15 stone, ouch. The deliver driver mentioned I would need 4 people to help put the table together. None of this was mentioned to me when buying the table and that makes it very hard for me to put the table together by myself. I can barely move the table top let alone lift it.

They do allow for me to cancel my purchase 14 days after delivery but it looks like they change £100 for the first item and £50 for the second. As the table legs were in a separate box its not clear if this counts as one item.

I would be happy to exchange the table for a smaller lighter one and ask them to refund the difference.

However I'm not sure of my rights here. I would say the table isn't fit for purpose because it weighs just too much and can't be constructed by someone on their own. I think its unfair I was sold a table without first being given all the relevant facts about how many people I would need to build it.

So apart from me thinking its unfit for purpose are there any other consumer rights that would protect me here and require Oak Furnitureland to exchange this item for something more sensible or just give me a full refund and come and take the table away?

I've only opened the box so far and haven't actually removed it from it as I just couldn't lift the damn thing so I can easily tape the box back up.

Thanks

Martin

The table is fit for purpose. It’s purpose is to be a table. It clearly wasn’t sold as a lightweight table nor one which can be put together by one person.

Did you ask the salesperson about how the table came? Or it’s weight? Or the assembly instructions. Are you sure it wasn’t mentioned in any literature how it came? Sounds like a fairly sizeable size item to get into a house in one piece...

Buying in store gives you limited rights to return so, you clearly like the table to buy it, and you saw it in store. Can’t you ask some friends or neighbours or pay a handyman for an hour of their time to assemble it?

Screw the legs on and get someone to help you turn it the right way. Easily a two man job.

It's an OAK table. Very dense... and thus heavy.

For £100, just get 4 blokes round and give them £20 each to assemble it. Spend the other £20 on a nice bottle of wine.

We always joke that the only thing of value in our house is the oak dining table, which is unlikely to get stolen!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Are you sure this isn’t just buyer’s remorse? 98kg is heavy but you must have had an idea of how solid/heavy it was when you saw it in store.

I agree with the last suggestion. Get some help to put it together. It sounds like it’s a table that will last a long time, so a small investment of time now will pay off.

Thanks for the advice. I think i need to sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning. I'm certainly regretting buying it as it is impractical and I would have thought the sales person should have pointed out what would be required of me to assemble the table. I'm more annoyed with myself for not thinking about this at the time but buying a dinning table is something I don't do very often.

Their website says I do have 14 days in which to return the item, even if I have to pay £100 to return it that would be better than having a table I won't be able to move.

Also they failed to deliver one of the other items I ordered, which they will now be delivering next Monday so I need to take another day off work. I can always negotiate with them and not request compensation for the extra time off as that would be over double the cost of returning the table.

A table isn't fit for purpose because it's too heavy? Heard it all now.

Yeah, we all prefer those flimsy tables that buckle under a bit weight.

Be annoyed with yourself because you are the only person to blame here.

Why is it impractical - is it larger than you thought or too big for the space?

    Depends its location/position.

Ours is usually pushed up against a wall when just the two of using it, but when we have guests it needs pulling out into the middle of the room. This is definitely a two person job.

Can't believe tho, that if this was the case with you that you didn't grab a corner and try to lift it in the shop and thus find out just how heavy these things are.

Agree with the above posters. Get someone in or some friends around and get it assembled with help.

Unfortunately it's not really practical to post a large table with long legs with those legs attached, there'd be a great risk of them being damaged in transit and the volume of packaging required would be excessive.

I think the average person should assume if a dinner room table is coming in the post the legs would need to be attached.

I think Pinkshoes has the right answer but a few crates of beers would probably do the job.
