Cancelling a mobile - mid contract with Tesco

So I want to move to another provider, but Tesco have told me that if I want to move I'll have to pay £233 which is just ridiculous. I'm a poor student, so really not within my budget but I need to get out of the family contract. I've found another I like.
Can I pay the upgrade fee of £80, which then starts a new contract and then cancel it in the 14 day cooling off period? Has anyone managed this successfully? Thanks

I think you will find there is no cooling off period for upgrades, only new contracts.0

You signed a contract.
You buy it out to leave early.

I did not sign the contract, I am not the contract holder as its a family account.
Have checked with Tesco and if I upgrade I still get the 14 day cool off period so this might work0 -
You misunderstand , 14 day cooling off on the new upgrade contract , not the existing oneEx forum ambassador

2019 a contract does not need to be signed to be valid .
Be carefull you or your family have a lawful contract that needs paying .
Poor student ( they all say that ) does not want to end up with debt recovery chasing and credit record trashed for six years .
You may well not be the one on the contract but someone is going to have to pay .0 -

It really, really won't.0 -
Does the value of the phone you've got on contract cover the cost of the Early Termination Fee?It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0

It won’t. When you cancel the new upgrade contract they will simply put you back onto the old existing contract.
You will trash the credit file of whoever in your family is the contract holder if you try and be too clever, you agreed to a 12 month contract and the only way out in this instance is to pay the early termination charge.====0 -
You can't "cancel" a mobile contract halfway through (generally speaking).
If you want out you need to pay up the contract.
Or wait until the contract ends.0 -
