Buying a washing machine

Hello,

I am purchasing a new washing machine. There are lots of different types, and I was wondering if anyone knew if certain specs would make certain washing machines a more economical buy? Such as perhaps a washing ,machine with a greater clothes capacity so that's more clothes washed with the same cycle. Or maybe the spin cycle? I'm clueless, which is why I'm wondering.

Thank you

I'd suggest you take out a free (actually £1) trial of Which and check out the various reviews of machines. What is your budget?

I bought a meile some 26+ years ago but the heater failed 2 years ago, and me leaving a pen in my pocket caused the rubber boot to spit (9 months ago). would have fixed it myself if my back was not as bad :(

Gut feeling, but I'd avoid the steam ones, unless you get a calcium free (and posibly other impurities) source of water.

Look at spin efficiency in % residual moisture, the better ones will be A rated <45%
Clothes will dry quicker and cheaper if in a dryer.

Check the manual for the capacity of the washes you will be using the headline number is for 60c full load cotton long eco wash, most will be 1/2 that some less.

Some will not be full load on the rapid wash.

Also by going to faster washes the water and energy saving claims no longer apply

If you can find the info drum volume can be a useful guide.

Some machine will struggle with a double duvet or a full set of bedding.

If you go big and want full loads you may need more clothes if you like to separate stuff.

I recommend Bosch, my Bosch Maxx is almost 20 years old, and never needed a call out from a service engineer. Highly reliable.

    Good luck

@neilmcl my budget would be around 150, maybe a little bit more if i see something particularly good/will save more money in the long run.

I'd say it depends more on the household makeup. You're going to use it more if there are two adults and two children in the house than if there was a single male.

so economically wise if its just a single male who can usually get away with one load a week (occasionally two) and who is happy to just shove it in and turn it on then just buy the cheapest machine you can find. For a family of four you may want to look at possibly a bigger drum/load/fast wash/the various programmes on offer and the running costs because it will be on more often than a single person.

I forgot to mention, it would just be me living here (had a break up two days ago =/) so might a cheap small one do?

A 5 or 6 kg one would probably suit you. This lets you do a wash every few days avoiding running out of clothes. Okay it won't take a duvet, but they can be done at a launderette if required.
