What does the "terminal" sign at the beginning of the 40 limit look like? Is it a simple round "40" or is it rectangular with "40" roundel and "40 Zone" underneath?

    The latter does not exist.

That may well be toomanypoint's point.

Quite a lot of councils invent "unofficial" road signs to "advise" people to slow down without going through the process of getting a TRO etc. They're not supposed to, but they do!

There's one on the A477 between St Clears and Tenby on a short dual carriageway section. Circular signs with a 50 in the middle with a grey outline. Purely advisory. Has to be red to be enforceable.

    .

Yes it does and it's not advisory but mandatory. See para 8.4.1 of this document:

And the reason I asked was because the recommendations for repeaters in "40mph zones" are different to those in areas where a normal 40mph limit (indicated by means of the usual round sign) prevails. It could also explain why, in the areas mentioned by the OP, there are "40 mph" roundels painted on the road as they might be used as an alternative to the conventional repeaters which are said to be lacking.

    Advisory speed signs aren't round.

Some are, with a green outline. Sometimes accompanied by “Twenty’s plenty”.

Andy, you don't come across as clever when trying to nitpick.

Go here for my reference. They are on a rectangular board but a circular disk with a grey circle. You will see them in urban areas 20mph advisory with white roundels. They are unenforceable as only red circles are mandatory. It is the reason why roundels on the floor are not enforceable. Lots of people had their convictions quashed at the Severn Bridge for this reason.

Yes we have some like that in Notts they are a bloody nuisance, if on automatic cruise control the car automatically reduces speed to the "Advisory Speed" once the built in cameras see the sign, they see the roundal and the speed but read it as official (Assume they are colour blind cameras)
