About 18 months ago I negotiated a great deal with Three - £7pm for 4GB, unlimited texts and calls.

I’ve had a letter today saying they’re reviewing the range of tariffs they offer... and putting me up to £14 for 4GB, unlimited texts and calls.

To double the price is horrendous, but they offer much better deals for new customers!

I know you probably won’t be able to offer much advice, but I wanted to vent

  • 18 months ago - sounds like the contract is up and so ends the special deal. Looking around I can see that they offer 4GB for £10pm on a 24 month contract.12GB for £15pm for 12 months. Ring them and see what they can do.

It was a rolling one month contract, rather than a 12 month contract. I do think I’ll call them but I’m not sure that they’re very receptive to negotiator these days? My husband tried last week and they just sent him his PAC code.

    Then do the same.

They've not 'doubled the price' by the way, your discount has ended which is not the same at all (despite the same outcome).

I've just joined 3 using a link I found here on MSE. I'm paying £10 per month for 12 months with 8gb of data, unlimited texts and unlimited calls. Ring them and ask if you can have that.

You can find the same deal if you go to Uswitch

Loyalty counts for little in the mobile phone world, but firstly look around at what other networks have to offer as you can now obtain your PAC by text and move very easily. Then phone Three and say you want to move to xx network who offer yy at £zz per month on a 30 day/12 month contract. They might match the deal, but if they don’t you’ve lost nothing in trying. Three tend to be competitively priced on their unlimited calls and high data use tariffs, not sure about their lower priced deals.

Check coverage and the T&Cs of the contracts you are comparing, in particular roaming, tethering, limiting out of bundle charges (setting a low or zero overspend is something alien to some networks).

Looks like they've dropped most of their rolling monthly contracts and the cheapest is now £16 for 4gb so it looks like they're giving you a £2/month discount for being an existing customer ....the best deals are on the 12 month and 24 month contracts but I have always found that if you ring them they will end up improving their offer.
If 4gb is enough then their 24 month contract gives 4gb for £10/month.
As has previously been said....they haven't doubled your contract price they've withdraw a discount.
Although you can also get 12gb for £13/month on a 24 month contract.
If you have to have a rolling monthly contract you may need to go elsewhere.

My mother has the same allowance but is paying £9 a month. I called 3 to either lower her bill to £7 since they were offering new customers double the data for £10. The response was that they couldn't as the new customer deal was 'only £1 more'. I tried again with the live chat and again was given 'special offers' which were more expensive . I asked for my PAC and I am now switching to lebara, which is offering unlimited calls and texts + 4.5gb of data for £7.95 via uswitch. So 3 has lost a loyal customer that has been with the network since it started for not even being willing to offer even a measly £1 discount. My mum's lebara tariff also includes 100 minutes of international calls. Never been with lebara but if the network is not great, I will rejoin 3 as a 'new customer' and take advantage of the mse offer :rotfl:, as lebara's tariff is a rolling one.

I just hope they don't come after my contract which is the 900 minutes + unlimited data one. A 3 staff warned me that they will be pulling the legacy contracts soon. I'm not sure if she was just saying this to scare me into a new contract but we'll see.

I'm with three paying £9.25/month for 4gb and unlimited everything else. I too got this letter moving me to £14/month or to another one of their tariffs of my choosing.
I was thinking of jumping ship even before this as I don't really use much data and I think there are tariffs out there cheaper but if Three insist on moving me to a more expensive one then I am definitely leaving them.

I see that virgin mobile have a 2gb contract for 6 quid a month but am reluctant to go with that one as I am currently a vm broadband/tv/landline customer and am going to give them my 30 days notice after their latest price hike. Is there anything of similar value out there? If not I may just go payg.

Just found sky mobile have a 1GB sim for £6/month. More than likely I will switch to them especially if the data rolls over.
