I was in a rush writing that and was a little struck by the computer showing an error with "bridalway" but it was happy with "bridal way" so I thought is was some American setting rather than bridal/bridle mix up 0 -

Who owns the wall? If it's yours, then yes, you can put a gate in it (unless there's a covenant of some sort in your deeds).
