Adding access to a public bridal way?

If I have a garden, with a stone wall backing on to the top of a public bridal way (which is a former railway line converted to public bridal way with steep sides/trees) - is there anything stopping me putting a gate in the wall and forming an access path down the slope? I think the local council manage the upkeep of the bridal way. Is it something that would need permission or just something you might do discretely :rotfl:

Do it quietly - if asked about permission say sorry.

On the basis of it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.....

Don't forget you will only get pedestrian (or equine) access, not vehicular access.

In cases like this, where you're winging it and hoping nobody complains, I always tell people to go into it with their eyes open - and be prepared to put it back how it was and "lose" all that money they spent.

If you can do it for £100, you've lost nothing if you get half a year out of it and somebody notices/complains.

If you've spent £8k on it and your neighbour's on the blower before the glue's set, then that's just daft.

Only ever commit the money you're prepared to lose when costing up the cost of doing it - and the cost of undoing it.

This appears to be a "bridal" way rather than a bridleway, so presumably a different sort of access..

    ...discreetly and discretely?
    a public bridal way

Strewn with orange blossom (or something more pungent from the party on the bridle)?:)

Who owns the wall? If it's yours, then yes, you can put a gate in it (unless there's a covenant of some sort in your deeds).

But access down the slope (land which presumably belongs tothe council?) might be trespass unless the slope is part of the bridal way, in which case you could cross it provided you are unflowered.
