So, now he keeps texting asking when my new cards have arrived so I can buy his present.

    Talk abut being cheeky!

Next time he brings the subject up remind him you wanted to take him for a drink but he didn't seem keen, immediately followed by "and it is time we stopped all this present-giving nonsense anyway isn't it?"

'Sorry I didn't say anything straight away , I'm skint but was a bit embarrassed. Anyway, is it ok if we stop the presents and just go for a pint now? It feels more the thing at our age and now you've got the little one. By the way how is the gorgeous one ?'

Depends on the friend - maybe he is joking and winding you up .. teasing you about the "excuse" of losing your cards etc. Better if you were just sensible and agreed not to exchange presents any longer - people can't mindread

I would have done several things differently.
    1. I would have [STRIKE]suggested[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]we[/STRIKE] told him that I wouldn't be buying any more birthday gifts pretty soon after I'd given him his gift. i.e. I wouldn't do it after he'd given me my birthday gift.
    2. I wouldn't have told him you'd lost your wallet. You've just given him the expectation that your getting him a gift but later than usual.

    You have 2 choices:
put on your big boy pants and tell him that he's not getting a gift this year and not for future years
Or buy him a gift for this year and tell him it's the last time.

I have to say I find it odd that 2 grown men who aren't that close buy birthday gifts for each other.
I find it even more odd that a grown man with a new baby is asking a 'not close friend' where his birthday gift is.
