Refurb Macbooks.

@OP ... was her now-dead laptop a Windows machine?
Why does she now want a Macbook? Is it "Because ... Apple" and all the cool kids have one? Or is there something specific she needs to do that is best done using a Macbook?
Does she realise that the user interface will be somewhat different to Windows? (Not an insurmountable challenge but still something to consider).0 -
Concerns about "not having latest security updates" on the chosen Mac are needlessly alarmist
I thought I made the point quite calmly. And what about the rest of my post, where I said that they'll come up against some software that won't run, because the software or hardware won't allow?
We still haven't heard WHY OP's daughter wants a Mac, and what she wants to do with it. But my opinion remains - that refurb one is poor value.0 -
Thanks for all the responses.
"Why does she want a Mac?"
She's just 17 and maybe within her set they're "cool".
Who knows, I was 17 once but I can't remember much about it except being right about everything. She has a iPhone when the rest of the family use Android, so maybe she likes to be different from the rest of us. Whatever her reason I'll let her learn her own lessons.
I take the point about the example I quoted being poor value. A little research finds better value examples. She doesn't need any special software for graphics or video, just general use.
Special thanks to the responder using a 15yr. old machine and XP :T0 -

Whichever you choose, make sure that there is something left in the budget for a solid state drive, if your choice still has an old mechanical hard drive.
If you do not, you will both regret it.
Compare the performance of the two examples on the lower part of the video screen with the two on the upper part;

So take note of how to fit the SSD before you purchase any particular model and also how to install the operating system cleanly to the device.

that model is now 9 years older and obsolete, I suggest she should wait and buy at least 2015-16 MacBook or otherwise go with a windows laptop.0

Worth bearing in mind that the batteries in laptops don't last forever and as the machine in question is an ancient Apple the cost of replacing it is likely to be eyewatering. I think it's around £150/£200 based on my 2011 MBP a few years ago.
Regardless ANY Apple repair WILL be eyewateringly expensive.0 -

Six months ago I replaced my much-loved Windows 7 laptop with a MacBook Pro. It has been a very steep learning curve! Without the help of my son-in-law I wouldn't have stuck with it - it would have long since been replaced with another Windows. Mind you, I am considerably older than your daughter which could have had something to do with it - young brains learn much quicker than old ones. I still don't love it and still regret not replacing like with like.
Before committing herself to a Mac, would she have the opportunity to borrow a friend's for a little while to see how she gets on?0
