We still have one of those old dial type. I set it and take to knob off to avoid the thermostat wars !!! Heating allowed on 1st November, if you're cold put something thicker on is my normal statement. hence my £63 a month bill, harsh man that I am  ;)
Yes I would do that but we have one of the new digital displays so not able to take any knob off.  DH recently recovering from open heart surgery so that could account for him always feeling cold at the moment.  I bought him a throw to stick over his legs if sitting on the sofa in the evening and that is my classic go to response to him feeling cold.  I don't think 20 degrees is too low but he often turns it up to 22.
I do not know your financial situation BUT why be cold if you can afford to turn the heating up ,most people are of a certain age on this forum and do not have many years left so why scrimp on basics like heating ! might as well stop eating and still be able to brag about how much capital they have .
Nothing to do with finances TBH. I have difficulty getting through that if you turn the thermostat up to 35 the house will not heat up any quicker and if it were to achieve the impossible and reach 35 you would be moaning its too hot. !!!
No body mentioned 35 degrees ! some one complained that their sick husband wanted to turn the heating up as they were cold ,whilst i agree that this is a money saving site what is the point of doing without if you can afford it ,not everybody wants to be the richest person in the graveyard :#

After running in ASICS for years, my current pair are own brand Decathlon and are super comfy and wearing really well.

I gave them a try as I could have always just used them as day to day trainers if I didn't get on with them.

So good, I ordered a second pair which are in the wardrobe for the summer, shiny and new!!
After wearing ASICS for years my current pair are from Decathlon. They are OK but not up to ASICS. I changed after the ASICS broke the £100 barrier. Not sure what to get next.

Did my first Park Run in 4 months today after an ankle injury last year. Lovely sunny day and interesting to hear a few of the regulars discussing the merits of their new Nike Zoom Vaporfly Elite trainees that had helped them all shave a minute or two off their time. Same trainees as the guy who ran the marathon under 2 hours. Boys and their toys :D
There again I am that slow it would have to improve my time by 20 minutes for me to be interested.

I did the Brass Monkey half M today - lots were wearing those fancy racers.
The last one I did - Vitality London half almost 2 years ago on the cusp of lockdown - it seemed like everyone in my range (roughly 1.20 to 1.26 HM) had them.
Whilst people should be free to spend / waste their money as they see fit, they do seem a very expensive way to go.
Thankfully running is such a simple cheap activity that I'm not too surprised people go for them.

I'm of the age where I'm getting slower and slower. I'm only racing against myself.
I'm missing something - surely unless one was in a competition then they would choose the best value shoes that were least likely to result in injury, what possible difference would using a different piece of equipment to go a few percent faster make, it is not demonstrating any improvement in skill or fitness or leading to any better fitness level, it just changes a number in  way that doesn't mean anything.
Similar to fancy lightweight bikes etc, probably more of a fashion statement than an attempt to win a race or beat a personal best...

I'd rather walk than run any day. Less strain on the joints.
  • Agree, about the running shoes, i run about 100 miles a month and use the basic running shoes from sports direct, cost about £35. ex_pat_scot, that is a decent HM time, I can't get below 1:35, and these days it is more 1:40 to 1:45 :(
It's just my opinion and not advice.

It's looking very much like our gas and electricity bills will account for an additional £1000 of spending, making our £22k in 2022 easier for us.   How nice of them!!!!  ;)
That could make the % of our spending on them increase from 4.4% of annual spends to almost 10%
Luckily our cheap fix runs until mid-April, unless something happens to Eon.   And it will all hinge on what the cap does in time for next winter.
I was reminded of this thread when reading The Telegraph article about fuel stress (which is when you're spending 10% of household income on domestic energy bills):
@Sea_Shell you need to spend more on other things to make sure your energy bill stays below 10% ;)
    @QrizB

If you're familiar with this thread, you'll appreciate my reluctance to mention Energy on the Debt boards!!!!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Yep, that's me as well. Did a local ten mile cross country affair yesterday and I run in a pair of £30 Sports Direct, rather fetching lime green Adidas trainers. They are just about ok. The cushioning seems to be going but still some mileage left.

Nowhere near as fast as you guys - 10 miles was 1.33 and I probably only do around 60 miles a month. Pleasant way to take some exercise though, and cheap though I did splash out £109 on a Garmin running watch.
