  • Great thread. I packed in work on Wednesday so am following this and similar discussions with renewed interest.

Just on the book front I have just read "The power of now" by Eckhart Tolle and found it interesting. I too am pretty much a sceptic but like to think I have an open mind and found this book quite profound. I'm no new age nut but I don't think you have to necessarily believe everything Tolle says to get something out of it.

    Keep posting please!

LOL.... Exactly. I find a positive mind-set is the answer to most of life's "problems".

Aha, but the book is specifically about NOT having a positive mindset.

By being too positive, you can set yourself up for a fall when things don't turn out as you expected, leaving you feeling worse than when you started!! ;)
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Yes, his story gets a mention in the book.

    Congrats on your retirement too!!

Interesting. Maybe I should have phrased that more appropriately... by positive meant grateful.

As for drawdown, it still seems a bit "unreal" as this month is only the first with no pay. I've been watching the markets closely for a while anyway, and have been doing a monthly round up (comparison) for a couple of years now, so will just carry that on. We can then see, month by month, where we are in comparison to the same time last year, and month on month, and adjust our strategy accordingly. Well that's the plan.

Have you come across JohnRo's Monthly Income thread over on the S&I board?

I find the breakdown and detail, analysis, and tracking over time very intriguing. I appreciate JohnRo income focus differs from your own but thought you might find the information spread interesting.

We had no Sky Broadband for about 30 hours over the weekend. Resolved now, but you realise just how much you depend on it when it’s not there. Good job for puzzle books, and reading. We’re not on data contracts for our phones, so we just managed. I think they only pay compo if it’s down for more than 48 hours.

We’ve recently had one of those outdoor gym equipment parks open just down the road from us, so I took a walk to have a look. All looks good now whilst it’s all new, but shall we bet how long it’ll be before the local oinks vandalise it, or it fails due to lack of maintenance. It’ll be a shame if that happens, as I plan to use it as part of my regime, especially whilst it’s all shiny and new.

Running – I’ve done 1 x 6.8M, 1 x 4.6M (with 6x2min efforts + 15 mins on outdoor gym). I did the efforts on grass this week, wow that’s hard work!! Plus todays run of 7.44M in 1h13m43s. That’s an average of 9.54m/m, which is the fastest I’ve run over that kind of distance in ages!!! That speed work must be paying off. Total running this week = 18.79M Probably going to suffer for it tomorrow!!

Swimming – My new nose clips came!!, so I did my usual 50mins. I mixed up the strokes again this time (albeit much easier with the clip), and did a total of 86x18m lengths = 1548m

I’ve given myself a full manicure and pedicure, with Gel Nails. I bought myself the kit a couple of years ago, and I’ve got quite good at it (if I do say so myself), even doing my ‘wrong’ hand. Got to look after my ‘runners’ feet too!! Lost a few toenails over the years – yuck! I’ve only bought 2 new colours this year, which is a test of my self-control as I love getting new colours, (the sparklier the better) as they are only about £3 each.

Dentist – all good, no further action required.

Financial – We’ve got 2 VRS12’s maturing on the 20th, and a Monmouthshire on the 28th, so that’ll be a little bit extra interest in the coffers. About £70 odd I think (as we had part interest credited in March)

I managed to get a Secure Trust 90 day notice account at 1.91% before they pulled it. So we’ve kept back what cash we need for the next 4 months, and then put the balance in there. I’ve then made a request for payment for end of December, to cover the 4 months after that (as you’re only allowed 3 w/d per calendar year)

The one product I’ve realised will increase use of now I’m at home is Loo Roll !!. I no longer get to pee at work!! Time to start rationing the sheets!!

Another money saving tip I thought of was to refill our pump hand soap dispensers with cheaper shower gel. It’s pretty much all the same stuff really isn’t it. Too extreme??!!

Donated 2 old sleeping bags to our local homeless shelter. We’ve had them in a sealed bag in the loft for ages and they’ve hardly been used. Washed up good as new!

Reading – I finished the “What If?” book, which was OK, but a bit too American. And yes, they were daft questions, but with some informative scientific answers. The most interesting was “What would happen if all the rain from a storm cloud fell in one massive raindrop?”. The answer is it would unleash the same energy as multiple atom bombs, and devastate a vast surrounding area with tsunamis too. It wouldn’t be good!

We’ve been to the library again, and stocked up on non-fiction. So now I’m actually reading Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species”!! Bit heavy, maybe, but hopefully will be an interesting read.

Well that was a busy (if random) week!! Thanks for reading….if you’re still awake!;)

Not much to report this week....much like the last 4!!! ha-ha!!! Watch out for that tumble-weed blowing past!

Looking forward to this bout of good weather that we're due over the next week or so, so I shall mainly be lounging in the garden with a book and a cold drink (possibly alcoholic!!)

Once the school holidays are over, then we'll be all systems go, booking holidays (UK) and going places. So far this year, we've only spent ave. c. £895 per month, so if we take our annual (finger in the air) budget of £15,000 and deduct our normal spends, that means we've got £4,260 to spend on FUN THINGS, for the rest of the year!!!!. Although somehow, I don't think we'll get through £1065 pm!!!
