Hi

I meet someone in the UK

They sent me their number - I then text them 30 - 40 times due to a show I booked them for

I've just found out that I've been charged 50p or so a text

As although they were in the UK

The number looks to be American

I stupidly didn't ever see or notice the number - as it was their name in my phone

It's an extra £20+

Do I have any recourse - as how on earth would I know they were 'overseas' texts - when the person was in the UK?

Thanks for any help - even if it's just to tell me I have nothing I can do and I'm an idiot

The fact that they were in the UK is irrelevant. If you phone or text an American number you pay the relevant rate for an overseas call or text.

Just be glad you didn't phone them lots of times!

American numbers are quite different to UK ones, so you should have noticed when you put them into your address book.

If its USA their number will start +1 or 001 (1 being the country code)

Ever since international calling/texting on a mobile was possible the rules have been the same, if it’s a standard UK mobile number you can call or text it and it’s a standard cost/in allowance call/text, no matter where it is.

If it’s not a standard UK mobile ie the number starts +1 (or + anything but +44) and it’s an international call/text even if the person is sitting next to you in your lounge.

It's common sense really, not just a 'rule'.
When calling or texting to a mobile number you aren't supposed to know where the phone is ATM - in its country or abroad - and to be charged different amounts accordingly.
If your UK friend is travelling and you don't know this, will you be happy to be charged extra for calling "abroad"?

Perhaps a small price to pay for addressing global warming?

    I wish I did notice

Unluckily for me - it was a case of her putting the number, and her name into my phone

So all I saw was her name... and didn't think for a second it was anything but a UK number...

At least I now know to check

    G'ah

In the old days I had a block on being able to make any international calls - but since 121/Tmobile changed to EE that obviously is no longer the case

    Thanks everyone for their responses

If I remember correctly it was USA

    01 or something like that

As I said above - I never saw/noticed the number - as on my phone it was always just the name that came up - because she put the number/contact into my phone... and I didn't know/think if checking
