  • I don't actually know for certain - but I'm assuming as people rely on these payments, the press would have jumped on it otherwise - you know what they're like, there would have been a news feature with a poor single mother who relies on that payment, kids will go hungry thanks to the government etc etc...
Just reading more from the BBC - apparently they are telling claimants to be on 'alert for fraud' and the information that is missing also includes, names, sexes and ages of children
There is a helpline if you need more info - 0845 302 1444

Thanks for the helpline no. :T I SEE SOMEONE ELSE IS GOING TO PROFIT FROM THIS FIASCO ,MILLIONS OF CALLS ,MILLIONS OF POUNDS FOR BT. !!!!!! AT THE VERY LEAST THEY COULD HAVE PROVIDED A 0800 NUMBER.

It dose'nt matter if they pay you your cb or not . cos you may have to race the fraudsters to the bank for your cash.
DEMAND THAT YOU BE ISSUED WITH A PAYMENT BOOK.

    Calm down.

There is still no evidence that the information has been picked up by fraudsters.

There is a great deal of scaremongering going on about something that could amount to nothing.

I hardly call it scaremongering. Identity fraud is a major thing nowadays and people could make fortunes from selling this information on.
Then if your identity does get abused, you could be talking thousands of pounds that you havent spent.
Have you got a job yet?

    NO? Then :shhh:

    A perfect example of scaremongering.

There is a huge difference between 'on the up' and 'a major thing'.

    Hello,
Just thought I would make matters worse by letting you know what HMRC's plans are... over the next few days HMRC will be writing to every family in the UK who has been affected to let them know their details have been lossed (Yes all 7.25 million households). Included in that letter will be a sh*tty leaflet explain how to prevent ID theft (Talk about taking the p*ss). Also, HMRC have claimed to setup an "emergancy line" (0845 302 4111) for concerned members of the public to call... this is not an emergencey line, this is just the normal Child Benefit Helpline. Anyone who calls this line regarding the above is just going to be diverted to an advisor across any of HMRC's business streams, for example, Tax Credits, Self Assessment, PAYE, Stamps etc. All the advisor can do to reassure you is read from a double sided A4 peice of paper which tells you f*ck all. No matter what you ask, the advisor cant do anything, you wont be allowed to speak to management and will be told if your unhappy write a letter of complaint.
For people who are concerned (this includes me and my family). When HMRC tell you not to worry don't belive it. Im sorry but it's true. The bigger picture is, whoever has the discs will sit on them until the dust settles. They can then use your details to do the following and more; open bank accounts, apply for credit cards, access your exsisting bank accounts, divert your child benefit payments & child.working tax credits payments, make fraudulent claims for other benefits etc etc.
Also, what HMRC haven't mentioned is that every child in the UK is issued with a National Insurance number at birth, so imagine how long this could go on for if they have your childrens NI numbers. They could do the same to them as to you in years to come.
Finally, just incase your wandering if you are affected... this fiasco affects you if you were claiming child benefit (both you & your partner & children) upto and including the 30th september 2007.
I know I have not reassured you with this post but I thought you could do with a little honesty. Good luck to us all!!!

    Regards,

    Hotblu

We all need to just wait and see. No need to panic unless something actually happens.

Someone might get run over by a bus tomorrow, are we all going to sit and panic 'just in case'?
