No key is 100% unbreakable but even non-personal data is sent in that way. We have been told that the chance of decryption is 'extremely slim'. But then again, even us lowlifes would know better than to send information on a disk with a third party without a password via a courior.

For Info: our 'script's are just that - a script. That we are supposed to read, word-for-tedious-mind-numbing-repetitive-i-am-a-robot-word to every customer with that query. I will ask permission before posting anything to be on the safeside (thanks for your concern Mikeyorb (and I assure you that's not sarcastic)), but if anyone happens to be reading this phones up and wouldn't mind reporting back, to be on the safeside, I would be very grateful.

The data was password protected - but it's fairly certain it wasn't encrypted. Otherwise Alistair Darling would have mentioned that .... as he was really struggling in the Commons earlier today for any 'good news'.

The one bit that has materialised later is that the 'courier' was the TNT service that links several Govt departments. That is characterised as reasonably safe - in that it is widely used to transmit cheques (in sealed pouches) between local offices and processing centres. But you've got to think twice before entrusting 25M plain English records?

Yes, I do realise that - part of my previous job was looking after an outward facing call centre specialising in debt pursuit. But I still make the point that the mundane data you're being given for this one-off job - is categorised as confidential until / unless HMRC decide to publicise it generally. And it's a bit ironic you should be considering publicising it on a thread that's criticising a Govt employee for the cavalier treatment of data?
but if anyone reading this happens would mind phoning up and reporting back, to be on the safeside

.... sorry - didn't get that. Is there a bit missing?

No I don't think so, I think payments will still be fine. I think it means that millions of peoples names, addresses and bank account details are missing somewhere and could be in the hands of Lord knows who.

Having not watched any news, has it been confirmed whether payments will still be made?
Have you got a job yet?

    NO? Then :shhh:

And this is the same government that wants us to trust them with the rest of our details and our biometrics?

This is absolutly outstanding, is there not a case for suing the HMRC or the Government for a serious DPA breach? I mean we are talking 25m people launching a case against those responsible.

We the taxpayer have payed and payed for these government depts. to hound us for our bank details and as a reward they throw all our details to the wolves. WE CANNOT TRUST THESE FACELESS AUTHORITIES WITH OUR PERSONAL DETAILS. REFUSE TO GIVE ANYMORE DETAILS .
Surley this is a gross misconduct charge (sacking offence) and we the public should stand up and demand that this time the culprit(s) goes.
I can't believe that after the discs going missing in the post once ,a second pair were sent by (recorded) post. . TNT my a*** (don't be fooled that this is anyway secure ) all they do is bundle up the mail and let the post office deliver it.
I could go on forever about these control freaks  .

It's 25M actually .... but that's the number of records. Only about a fifth of those are believed to contain Bank account details. So that's a bit better
On the news this lunchtime they said they thought the original 15 million was over inflated as only 13 million people claim it in the first place  Still how ever many million it is, it shouldn't have been allowed to happen in the first place.

It dose'nt matter if they pay you your cb or not . cos you may have to race the fraudsters to the bank for your cash.
DEMAND THAT YOU BE ISSUED WITH A PAYMENT BOOK.

I don't actually know for certain - but I'm assuming as people rely on these payments, the press would have jumped on it otherwise - you know what they're like, there would have been a news feature with a poor single mother who relies on that payment, kids will go hungry thanks to the government etc etc...
Just reading more from the BBC - apparently they are telling claimants to be on 'alert for fraud' and the information that is missing also includes, names, sexes and ages of children
