Out of contract with BT but their retention offers are still expensive

I've been with BT for a few years on their Fibre 2 (I think, the 50-72mb one) package, and my latest deal has just ended so they're putting me up to the expensive out of contract price.
I called to negotiate a new deal but the cheapest they can offer is £40 a month (just the fibre 2 and weekend calls, no extras). I explained that Sky are £27 a month for the same broadband (no weekend calls, but I never used the landline anyway) but BT said £40 was their best price and couldn't do any better. I even tried to get extras like complete wi-fi thrown in to justify the difference but no luck.
Last time I negotiated I remember the first line always offered a price like that, then if I asked for my MAC code they would pass me to the next level of the cancellation team who would always offer a much better deal. Do BT no longer offer good deals to try and keep you?
If I'm switching to Sky then is it best to use the link on online comparison sites (usually the same deal as their website, but with cashback)? Or are there better deals available, eg do the Sky reps in shopping centres have access to better deals?

BT is rarely the cheapest option these days and so you pay more for the name and the misguided impression that if something goes wrong with the line BT somehow have an advantage over everybody else. In reality they haven't since 2017 when Openreach was split off.
You can always bash your details into here and see what comes back:

MAC no longer in use .
Switch now led by the gaining provider.
BT do deal but as with many since the new compo rules came in they are not so eager.
Once you start a switch they may come back with a better offer .
Not all new BT contracts have a built in price increase march every year . Looks like no Ofcom get out either.
I pay under £40 pm for BT up to 80 meg Plus paid advanced line rental Plus BT Max TV Plus BT Sport HD and some calls .0
