I do not use standby or hibernate. Every time I switch on I want a clean start, nothing lurking. With ssd the extra time you save is minuscule in my eyes. I do turn the screen off after 10 mins of no action.

I also made it to deleted the swapfile on exit, but this cause a black screen on boot after doing updates. :(

Eveytime, the computer is connected to the internet, it is at risk of hacking. Even if we are not aware of it. The anti-virus companies, only release updates several hours or days after they find a security hole. So your computer is always at risk (technically).

Despite saying, that I leave my computer on for several hours, when I should have shut it down...

My PC shuts down automatically after I think 60 minutes if it's been idle for that long.

No it doesn't. It is either goes to sleep or hibernate.

Not an IT expert obviously!! So even though the PC lights go out, the fan stops and I have to manually start it up again it's not actually shut down?
    It's nothing , not nothink.

When I used to have a Windows 7 computer I used to hibernate it overnight rather than shut it down, to speed up its readiness to use next day. One day, the hibernation file somehow became corrupted and I was unable to restart the computer or delate the .hib file. Perhaps there is some esoteric technique of getting around this to force a full boot sequence, but if so I was not able to find it anywhere. I ended up having to reformat the hard drive using a Linux CD and do a clean reinstall of Windows with all the time-consuming hassle of putting everything back. Never used hibernate again.

Run my little NUC pc 24/7.
bought 2nd hand and likely been running 24/7 for 6/7 years except for required reboots and one new Msata drive.

Yes, Windows updates are applied when you shutdown/restart.

By default in Windows 10, a shutdown won't apply updates, whereas a restart will.

If you want to shut down and apply updates, you need to either hold SHIFT when you click Shut Down, or to disable Fast Boot:

Nope. Not heard of Wake On LAN?
I have often started up a shutdown computer on a network I have remote access to.

Was it not possible to boot into linux from the CD, mount the windows disk and delete the corrupt hiberfile.sys from linux?
