    Because it has compensation (for items which have intrinsic value) whereas ordinary Signed For doesn't.

    Recorded does have compensation up to £50, but that does not include watches which are only covered with SD.

    Are you just talking about royalmail?
    Other couriers are available?

    Yes, I know that. But that's the difference between Signed For and Special Delivery, if we're talking about the options down at your local post office. And I'm not sure there's much competition from other couriers in the £6-ish small packet/not huge value market.

    That's not correct.
    Watches are covered for loss or damage up to £50 when sent by signed for provided that they do not fall under the classification of jewellery:
    If you’re sending valuables, money or jewellery in the post, you should use Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed®

    Our definition of jewellery includes: any precious metal that has been manufactured in such a way as to add value to the raw material, including coins used for ornament;

    diamonds and precious stones
    watches - the cases of which are made wholly or mainly of precious metal
    So providing that it's not a gold, silver or platinum cased watch, Signed for will provide some cover for loss or damage.
