building new pc

hi,

i am planning to build a new pc.

i have a 400w PSU, 1GB DDR2 667mhz Memory and an nVidia 7600GT graphics card.

i need to get a case, motherboard, cpu, harddrive, dvd rw and anything else you can see i have forgotten. do all the cables eg. sata cables, ribbons etc come with the components or do i need to buy them seperately?

do you have any suggestions ofr which particular components to buy - i don't know a good motherboard from a bad one. what would be a good cpu in my price range? i was thinking about AMD 64 4800+. i plan to sell my current pc for around 150GBP and that would be the main part of my budget, i could maybe top up with another 50 pounds. i wil be using the pc for gaming and general internet etc.

cheers.

a new motherboard should have all the cables with it and the case should have all the wires/screws etc too.
the first thing you need to do is have your budget. what can you afford with the mobo and the cpu etc...
and you wont be playing the latest games with that video card and the budget you have.
if you say 100 quid for the hdd and dvd, case etc.. then you are left with 100 for the mobo and the cpu. you wont get a real modern gaming system for that.
although itll be a decent puter enough.

also remember to make sure the new mobo will support your ram and (agp?) card. and of course the new cpu!
    Get some gorm.
  • When you buy a new mother board it comes with sata and pata leads, a driver disk, and a couple of screws if your lucky, most motherboards are pcie graphics which is what you have, I guess you will need a socket 775 cpu, if you are strapped for cash get a dual core http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?IL-D925 is cheap at £43 get a decent make motherboard like asus, expect to pay at least £40, get a cheaper mobo and your asking for a lifetime of BSOD, £30+ for a nice case, £25 dvd writer, your done, that will get you a modest pc, if you want to play the latest games like quake wars and the like, your at the basic requirements really, you pays your money, you takes your choice.

P.S. as ormus said HDD £30+........you have an OS?

check out ebuyer for the 64 bit 4800 amd cpu (am2 socket) at 62 quid and a msi mobo for about 30 quid. (they also have a 64 5200 cpu).
the msi has an agp slot and will support your ram.

(check the specs carefully before you buy anything though).
    Get some gorm.
  • it is a pci express gfx card that i have. i have a dell gx520. i bought a gx620 mobo for it so i could install the card but the mobo has turned out to be faulty casuing all sorts of boot problems and hang ups and BSOD. so i have now reinstated the original board which only supports on board or pci.

would you rate an intel pentium D over the AMD dual cores?

i have a 3.0Ghz pentium d in my current set up and it has been fine.

I'm guessing the PSU supplied with the case will be very much a budget affair so though about selling that on ebay and using the brand new 400w huntkey 80% efficient PSU i have sitting doing in a box.

i was going to keep my copy of XP pro - i'm hoping my dad who has xp home on his current pc, will buy my old one. i can then reinstall his xp home on that.

it all seems ok to me.
and can swap the psu if required and sell tother one on ebay.
you could get a much bigger hdd for just a wee bit extra money.

    ps,
im not a great fan of gigabyte mobos. thats just cause ive a problem with em in the past though. others swear by them!

worth considering? msi mobos are cheaper and will pay for the larger hdd?
    Get some gorm.
  • not sure what your budget is but i see on eBuyer you can get an intel core 2 QUAD(!) for under £170(!!)

Check out the pentium dual core cpu's-e21xo. They are based on the more expensive e4xxx and e6xxx core 2 duo cpu's and start at £42 seems they can be o/clocked to 3+ghz , also a dual core cpu will drop straight in in the future. I used to use amd cpu but the new intels are the ones to watch -my e2180 is noticably faster than prev. 3.2 pentium.
