Hewlett Packard or Dell?

I would go for Dell.
For the last 2 companies I have worked for in the last 13 years, I have installed a number of Dell servers and over 30 desktops / laptops and I can say that we have never had a problem.
The only problems we have had have been with the Tos***a and Hew*** Pa****d hardware - but these have now been replaced with Dell!
I also have Dell 2 desktops and a laptop at homeI am a debt counsellor working in the voluntary sector - we don't charge our clients for the work we do!0 -
Dell with XP on it, definitely NOT vista.0

My Dell Latitude laptop has been one of the most reliable laptops I've owned, second only to an Apple.
You pay more for the Latitudes as they are aimed at the business user, but they are better built than the Inspiron range and have technology that is guaranteed to be supported by Dell for at least 3 years (parts, upgrades, spares etc). But you'll get more "cutting edge" technology with the Inspiron (home user) range.
Same with the Optiplex (business) vs the Dimension (home).
I've spent many thousands of pounds on behalf of various clients with Dell, and they'd be one of my top choices for business use.0 -

See a Dell advertised for £399, it will cost you £500 in the finish
Aw, come on. Play fair. Any product, be it a computer or a car, can be upgraded by its purchaser. I'd actually say computer pricing is a damn sight more transparent than car pricing anyway.
Dell and HP go the same route in that both will supply equipment that's built down to a price, or built up to the level of purchaser requirement.
The only area where this doesn't hold true is Dell Outlet, where what you see is what you get.
For a business purchaser, the outlet may not appeal. But a domestic consumer would need his / her head examining not to shop there: we've had four PCs ostensibly "refurbished" (yeah, right) from Dell Outlet for family and friends over the years and each has been a superb value-for-money acquisition that has never gone wrong.
And as I said earlier, Dell's decision to confront Microsoft over its Vista OS speaks volumes for Dell's market savvy and sensitivity to consumer needs.
Would Microsoft have reluctantly decidede to extend the product life-time of Windows XP without what now appears to have been a major behind-the-scenes row between it and Dell over Vista's deficiencies?
I think not. As a major player which Richmond has to sit up and take notice of, Dell -- not HP -- has done every consumer a favour. I for one will always support an outfit which doesn't roll over every time Bill Gates smiles in its direction.0 -
Not trying to be argumentative here or appear a smart alec but if there has been such a confrontation between Dell and M$ why do Dell openly recommend Vista on their home page for both business and home use?
Surely if they're not happy, as many are with Vista, then they shouldn't recommend it?
Slight hypocracy on Dell's part I think.
I've never had a Dell and just purchased a HP laptop after considering Dell. I too agree that their pricing is a bit misleading with a "cheap" initial offering. I don't like them hiding the delivery costs either until the last minute if ordering. I did go that far when it was "free" delivery but on the order confirmation page it quoted the price as including £50 delivery!!:rotfl: Where did they get that for a laptop? Now the prices are less but delivery is extra!0 -
My official experience with HPs is great. Have never used Dell before. They are cheap for sure. The delivery charges are extra, I agree, and I have heard lots of bad stuff about Dell, like those being crap machines for the most part, but again that is what I have heard and have no personal experience of Dell as such.
I do respect opinions of people who have had good experiences with Dell.
Cheers.0
