Hewlett Packard or Dell?

We need to buy a couple of computers for our new office but we can't decide whether to get a couple of HP's or a couple of Dell's. Dell is cheaper although we don't have any personal experience of them. We have had a HP for years at home with no probs. What do you think?

hp used to have great build quality, im not sure thats the case these days.
dells are great value for money.
i like cheap cause when theres a problem you just get another one and carry on working.
with a dell you can afford to keep a spare PC in the cupboard. thats important for an office/business. and you dont need expensive support, for the HW at least.

I think they are very similar in comparison, HP might have the edge in quality, but neither are comparative with, for example, Sony or Apple, but then they are in a different price bracket too!

I usually buy from Dell for PC boxes because there have a wider range and prices are very competitive. I've also never had any serious problems with their laptops or towers.

To be fair, I don't think you'll have any significant problems with either, unless something like a HD dies, and that could happen to any system.

Small business and personal support with Dell is ropey, offshore call centres with not very good advice, and sometimes it's difficult to get an engineer to come out and repair a system which is under on-site warranty. Larger company support is excellent, ring up and they are there the next day.
  • I vote dell.
I never used to like them, but I recently bought a Vostro laptop from them, and a key came off the keyboard. I rang customer services, and they were BRILLIANT.
They posted out a new keyboard to me that was here the next day (i didn't ring until 3pm). Whilst on the phone, the lady ran through the procedure for removing and replacing the keyboard.
the keyboard arrived early morning, about an hour after it was delivered, the lady rang back to check not only had I recieved the keyboard, but also that I had managed to fit it, and asked if there were any other parts I wanted to replace.
Seriously good customer service, I recommend them fully.
embarrassed to say I used to work for barclays..sorry

My preference is for Dell for both the corporate and domestic environment because they've regularly beaten HP in the value for money stakes.

Only problem is. . . there've been no problems. And a test of how good a supplier actually is arises not when everything's OK but when something's gone wrong.

Ultimately it comes down to simple ratios: cost of purchase / cost of aftercare.

A relatively cheap and straightforward business PC should (though there's no certainty of this) be less likely to suffer the problems of complex all-bells-and-whistles consumer PCs -- bit like buying a Morris Minor back in 1970, rather than the latest Rover -- so paying for the best next-day response business PC aftercare might be an unnecessarily high expense compared to an if-and-when contingency for the services of a local computer specialist.

As a side note, I'm told that Dell has decided not to continue to make Windows Vista mandatory on its PCs but to bring back XP. On that basis alone, I'd be choosing Dell.
  • My last few PC's have all been Dell. Any problems have been quickly sorted so i would recommend them to.

    Excellent Prices as well.

I'd vote for Dell too, very pleased with my new Inspiron 531.

just a had a newsletter from dell.
they have the new quad core xps 420 desktop pc in stock for 599 quid!
    very nice too!

  • For desktops I would say Dell, for laptops I would go for HP.
  • HP every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

See a Dell advertised for £399, it will cost you £500 in the finish
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical
