The second you list is used and risky and 7th gen so a bit of an unknown.
The first you list is more attractive, at least you get 3 month guarantee but either of these could be the much less desirable 'specials'. I am normally quite happy to buy manufacturers/approved refurbished if at a heavy discount....
but in this case there are a few unknowns about them AND given Almillars info (assuming it is correct) a new 8 with full warranty at such a price would attract me a lot more!

If budget is tight why not wait as l suggests there are probably refurbs available in a few weeks time if al's icea fails. You would need to ensure you get the psu in the price of and not new ones.

Only you can decide based upon your budget and assessed risks!

Can you not pay Amazon a one off fee of £10 to remove the offers/ads from a Fire if needed. We did for my wife's 8HD.

harz99 sorry I may be thick but I do not understand this comment. What is this about offers/adds? Are these embedded in the Kindle?

"Special offers and sponsored screensavers display when your device is in sleep mode." From Amazon website. Could be more over time? Uses up battery power when supposedly sleeping? Version without offers cost same + £ 10

I've got a 7 and an 8, and they both have the ads. They're just the lock screen when you switch on, and have to swipe to unlock. Instead of some picture or whatever, it's an ad. I don't find it obtrusive at all, and if battery life is important to you, you should be looking elsewhere anyway. That's one place where Amazon save money. Mine are both used around the house so not a problem.

Thanks for the clarification post al.
If that's all it is then most people would just save £10.
My fear of greater battery use was/is probably unfounded!

Amazon do say their adds are targetted (personalised) and I am never keen on that. Reducing to zero is probably nigh impossible (Amazon for example send targetted emails after viewing or buying items - not the only ones by any means!) but I am keen to minimise.

One needs to decide personal preferences!

We have the Fire 8HD bought direct from Amazon, it had ads, there was an option in the My Amazon somewhere to pay £10 to remove them, so after trying with ads I did pay the tenner.

Thanks everyone, we are going away next week so I bought a new HD8 32GB without special offers for £85 on Ebay, should arrive tomorrow, hope I can get my Kobo books onto it plus my Amazon books as I have a lot of catching up to do.
