Why is it that when I open a word document it wants to open in start Office 365 trail even though it was created in Word 2003?

How do I correct this?

'Why' is because the relevant file extension (presumably .doc if created in 2003) is associated with the operating system as being handled by the Office 365 version of Word.

But as I saved it in Word 2003 it should reopen as Word 2003 - it has in the past - I suspect some evil microsoft update has changed it somehow.

I have never installed Office 365 trail (what ever it is) and probably never will

How do I change it back?

You could try reading EveryWhere's post #3 immediately above your post.

There's little point complaining about what has happened when you've been given a link to solve your problem.

An installation of a T-R-I-A-L version of Office 365 will have changed the 'open with' pointer for documents. How you apparently installed/ had installed an Office 365 trial is a question only you could answer.

It won't have got there on its own and no update from windows I've had across the Windows 10 boxes I manage has ever installed it for me.

Note that the fact you created it in Word 2003 is immaterial, Word files can be opened by many other programs, not just Word.

Office Trials don't appear on computers out of thin air, you'll have probably downloaded it at some point.

Office 365 is like renting your software, rather then buying it.

Except you have no control over what software features they add or remove. It is constantly changing.

That is why I don't want it
