How bizarre one would think that IT and software related jobs were those that could and should be completed remotely.
Why do you need people in IT collocated when they espouse to the rest of us the value of collaborative remote working?
Most IT companies will not allow people to work remotely full time.
Some will allow it part time.
Some will not allow it at all and have good reasons for that.
I’m sorry I don’t make the rules.
I was recently offered a position at rolls Royce in Bristol and they don’t allow it at all.
I’m not defending it, just passing on the facts.0 -
Not originally from London but lived there nearly 30 years now, no intention of leaving anytime soon either, I enjoy living there and I enjoy the salary my job brings.
For the role I have I would guess I would look at losing a third of my salary elsewhere in the UK and the kind of role I do is less common outside London as well.
Yes I take a hit on property prices, but at least I can have reasonable hope that some of that can be recovered if I want to downsize or move elsewhere in retirement.
In all honesty my ideal retirement would probably be retaining my house in London and having a property we could go to overseas for a few months of the year, but I doubt finances would allow that unfortunately!0 -
Sounds trivial, but one major advantage of living oop north is the water. Compared with Thames Valley water which comes out of the tap like milk of magnesia, soft water is one of life's luxuries. Also reduces housework and makes appliances last longer :money:0

Yep it does sound a bit trivial as it can be solved by buying a water softener.0 -

One advantage of living in London is the water, as in the relatively small amount of it that falls from the sky each year0 -

i think I can mange to operate a drinking water tap in return for the benefits of a 6 figure salary and an early retirement
Like you said it’s trivial0
