illegitimacy is not longer relevant for most legal purposes
I'd be intrigued to know where it does matter in UK Law, if you could find the time?
Interestingly the Moslem faith still appears to take a strict line on those born outside of wedlock
but I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that opinions vary across the faith & globe.they are not allowed to take the important posts like that of a judge, Imam-e-Jamat and Maraja etc0 -

Thriftyemma.
As Tonymmm stated it is a legal requirement to re-register a birth if the parents marry. But to my knowledge nothing is done if you don't.
My sister married the same year as me, 2002. And while I re-registered my three boys, she didn't bother with her three children.
And nothing has been done to her!
I changed my boys as I'd given them my maiden surname ( so we all had the same) so once married wanted them changed to my husband's name. So the re-registering changed their surname.
My sister had given her children her partners surname, when they was born. So there was nothing to change.0 -

We got married 3 years ago and were advised by the registrar to re-register our children.0 -

ILLEGITIMATE How i loathe that term, especially when applied to innocent children who had/have no say whatever in the circumstances of their conception and birth.
In the eighties, the Law Society advocated a change in the wording to 'the child of illegitimate parents' and I always felt that put the onus on the adults which is where [any] responsibility should lie.
Fortunately, times and society moved on and the concept was left behind...in the past, where it belongs!0 -

Yeah, I was branded Illegitimate by the Catholic Church because my parents were married in a Protestant church.
Oh yeah the good old Catholic Church.
My husband wanted to get married in the Catholic church so we approached the priest. When he told him he was divorced(they were married in a registry office) he wanted to write to his ex-wife and ask her if he had fulfilled all his duties to her and his children.
One minute you're not married unless its in the Catholic church but you want to write to his ex-wife? Can you imagine?
We got married in a registry office which I was very happy about so the priest did me a favour.0
