Who pays for return of badly described goods bought online?

Options
  • Bought a computer keyboard online with debit card.
  • Picture showed US layout. Title and blurb didn't specify any different.
  • After purchasing I noticed that "technical information" (only accessible after clicking into ad) says UK layout.
  • Immediately (within the hour) sent a note to seller saying that I only wanted the keyboard if it was US layout. Message sent through website's "webnote" service, the only way to communicate with them.
  • Their webnote service was not functioning properly at the time. 24 hours later I received a reply that the keyboard had already been shipped.
  • I had to pay 13 pounds to return and did so under protest, pointing out that seller should meet the cost.
  • Seller pointed out that in the terms & conditions (point 13) it says that "Images are for illustrative purposes only".

Not much. If I were buying from a UK supplier and the photo was of the US variation I'd be checking the blurb. You'd have a stronger case if it were the other way round.

Is there any reason for you not just rejecting the delivery for it to be returned to sender free?

Ok. Thank you. ANSI (US) keyboards are common the world over though.

UK supplier. Overclockers.co.uk in Staffordshire. What are distance selling requirements?

Bit late for that. I opened it, checked to see if I could deal with the alternative layout and decided to return.

Consumer rights aside, was it really something worth spending £13 returning?

I've used both and afaik, there are no extra characters, they're just in different places.

You can even set the keyboard to US in settings while having a UK keyboard attached and press what would be the correct key on a US keyboard.

My home laptop has a US keyboard. My work laptop has a UK keyboard. One easily adapts. :)

It's a bit more different than that, but I take your point. The keyboard cost 100 quid. I didn't think it was too much to get what they put in the product pic.
