Warning to buyers who are missold and item through paypal by dodgy sellers

Hi everyone

I have recently bought a mixer from usa through ebay. When it arrived the power cord was cut into making me think it was dangerous! The seller had listed the item as in perfect physical working condition. So i opened a dispute with Paypal as i had used them to pay through credit card (luckily).

So now Paypal are saying i have to send the mixer back to him at the cost of £77!!!! even though its not my fault that the mixer dosen't work adn is hazardous!!!

Is there nay way i can reclim the postage cost from paypal or ebay? I find this unreal that i have to pay for something that isn't my fault. Amy help getting my money back would be appreciated, any lawyers round here?

Cheers in advance

Would it be easier to get it checked out and possibly the cord replaced?

Is it possible that the cord was cut to remove a US plug as the seller knew it was going to a non-US destination?

Either way, your only option is to communicate with the seller (which should have been, and for all I know was, tried before the dispute was opened).

You cannot reclaim the postage from PayPal or eBay. Would you try to reclaim your petrol from a newspaper if you answered a classified? Depending on the cost of the item, it might be best to ask for a partial refund.

Also, make sure that it's tracked otherwise the seller can claim that he didn't receive. If you hadn't considered that, it should increase the cost by ~£20. If you've only looked at Parcelforce/RM, there may be cheaper ways to send to the US.

I assume you checked what voltages it would run on before you bought it as well - it may well be a USA-only model and not suitable for our higher voltage supply over here...

When I volunteered for a charity, we had to cut the plug off electrical items. If we sold it with the plug on, it needed expensive testing, but if we cut the plug off then it didn't. I don't get why, but it's possible that your item has had the plug cut off for a simialr reason.

Unforunately i have contacted a respected local repair guy he tells me that there is no point trying to fix it as it is beyond his repair. The actual cord was cut into and is permanently connected to the power module inside the mixer, the seller said the listing was in perfect physical condition! hence my annoyance.

I did buy a voltage converter and tried out the unit it did not work. So basically i was sold a dud which i am now £77 out of pocket with. Does anyone know how to reclaim money maybe from the seller as hes basically frauded me on the net.
  • Why £77? Is that really the cheapest you can post it for?

If you want a refund you must return it. If you had been defrauded, he'd be refusing to take it back.

Yep £77 is the cheapest it is a big item. I was quoted £90 with royal mail but i found www.interparcel.com which is online courier using ups.

Im sure you would be annoyed if something didn't work and your now £77 out of pocket? Basicaly ive trusted someone who uses ebay, they lie on their listing then paypal say "oh you have to pay your own postage costs back to the seller" even though hes misrepresented his item!, what a joke, its a bad situation to be in as i don't seem to be covered by anything even section 75 on my credit card, although im working on that.
  • Yeah, I'd be annoyed. But to start with I wouldn't have bought something that expensive and valuable from ebay, or if it was ebay, it wouldn't have been overseas.

I bought an £800 bike from Germany recently. It was kind of a gamble because if anything went wrong in transit, we'd only be covered if it went missing... and there was a risk I'd have to pay to return it if necessary. But I knew that and accepted the risk.
