Tie Down / D Ring - How to attach to vehicle

Hi all,

Wondering if we had any mechanics or people who would know best regarding attaching tie down hooks / D rings to a vehicle.

I currently have some already come as standard with my Peugeot vehicle, but as you can see from the attached pictures, they have already been bent out of place due to the stress put on them.

Unfortunately I can't change the weight of the load being carried.

I was wondering if anyone had experience, or knows if its possible to easily attached tie down hooks or D rings to the frame of the vehicle. I'd likely ask a mechanic or similar to do it to ensure its done properly.

Also, can anyone confirm if the metal they can see behind the original D hook on the vehicle, is suitable for attaching a new one too? As there is already a hole there!

Thanks for any help and advice!

I hope you're not thinking of overloading the vehicle, but even so I wouldn't fancy counting on those in a crash.

How about also positioning other items so as stop things sliding around.

Who overloaded them to bend them?

Blimey, what are you doing to them...? Ratchet straps done up to a middle C?

I'd guess ratchets. If the load moved enough to deform the tie down that much it doesn't look like it would stop moving.

Mind you, it might help if they were strapped to pull in the direction designed, rather than directly opposite.

This. They are designed to pull the other way, what have you been doing to pull them like that ?

Seats down with something heavy over the seats, rather than in the boot space?

You could drill and rivet them back down - can you access behind to reinforce with more metal?

Happy to say I haven't been overloading the vehicle. Vehicle is designed to take 7 people. This is just 2 trolleys weight about 70kg each.

I used ratchet straps, and to ensure they don't move around they were done tight, hence the bending.

Can't do much about them being bent the wrong way, as the direction of the 'right way' is towards the side of the car, and not towards the middle, where one would strap most things down. Poor design in that sense. One has bent and that's from a strap going directly upwards.

Naturally these hooks are designed to carry lighter loads.

So does anyone know if the metal which can be seen under the hooks (the kind of gold looking type) is a strong enough metal to put up with a stronger type of tie down hook?

Or has anyone got any experience with making modifications like this?

    Thanks guys

Or designed to retain things against the side of the boot...?

I suspect what you're seeing there is bodyshell. The square hole will probably be for a locating peg on the back of the tie-down, and not designed for much more load than that.

Put a big and sturdy enough spreader plate on the other side, you can put a ring in that'll lift the entire car.
