I've opened an account, can I switch it straight away?

I've just opened an extra bank account with Santander this morning online, and want to take advantage of the RBS £175 switch service using this new Santander account.
It is already opened and accessible online. Is it wise to:
A) put at least £1 into the Santander account
wait for the debit card to come via post in a few days
Or can you apply to switch this new account straight away without any of the above?

You need the Debit Card number in order to switch0

You sometimes need a debit card number in order to switch.
Some banks let you tick a 'i haven't got a debit card for this account' box.
But yes, you can switch immediately subject to above0 -
I take it that RBS needs this info, and you cannot bypass it?
I have recently switched an account to RBS and if memory serves, an active debit card number for the "old" account is required. Again, can't remember exactly but I'm sure there was noification to the effect of no debit card, no switch.0 -

Can you remember if you had to sign for the card when it arrived?0 -

Sorry for the extra question, but can 'active' mean a brand new one that has just been issued and not used. Or does it have to have been used in a cash machine, or used at least once in a shop to buy something?0
