Charged from the day you order the sim?

Is it right you get charged the order your sim? I switched to a better Sim only deal on Virgin, but because I was with Virgin already I had to leave with my number to a Three temp sim, then go back to Virgin, this took a few days. When I just looked at my bill I got charged from the day after I ordered the sim, so basically paying for something I'm not using. I presume it was from when you activated it, so I left a week or so while I was swapping numbers. Hence I've paid double.
It's not much but I think the principle of being charged from the day you order isn't right, or is this normal?

You should have been able to change contracts with the same network without changing SIMs, or switching away and back. I've done this a few times with Three and would expect other networks to do the same... it’s less admin for them if nothing else, also you aren’t without service for a few hours and there will be no overlap in billing.
