Setting up a 2nd SSID on same router.

Hi,


I would like to restrict access to certain devices on my home network from guests but keep access open to the family.
I'm happy for the guests to connect to wifi and use the internet.
I have a Sky router which is around 3 years old.


If I setup a 2nd SSID with a different password on the router and then gave the guests that information to connect would that achieve what I want?


Is there anything I need to watch out for?


All my devices would remain connected to my current SSID.

Pretty much, yes.

Remember that it will not change the amount of bandwidth available which will still be shared with your family devices.

Is the Sky router capable of that ? If it is a dual band then maybe but I don't think setting up a guest network is possible.

Even if you could, they would both have access to the same network anyway, unless you set up a vlan

I'm not sure, that is why I mentioned it was a Sky router.
I will try it this weekend and report back.

I am hoping that the fact that the guests are connected to a different SSID and the devices I want to 'hide' are on another SSID means they won't be visible. I also plan to stop broadcasting the SSID we use in the family.

My Sky Q router is from March this year and doesn't support guest networks.


Some powerlan adapters support wifi rebroadcast, I know TP-Link have a model that allows you to create a guest network, not sure if it it can be configured to only allow internet but not network access.

Or buy another router that does, and figure out how to configure it with the Sky settings

What devices are you trying to "hide" ?

Even if you connect via different SSIDs, visiblity of network devices like the router interface and NAS drives will not change.

If you've got an old router lying around, use this for your guest network...ethernet cable from sky router into old router, a few settings changed in old router (turn off DHCP, and set up the wifi network) and away you go
