Looking for a bigger car, do I need a diesel

Look for a pre-DPF Mondeo diesel, you should be able to average 50mpg out of one of them. When I took Mrs.G-J's to work for a fortnight (and only to work, no short runs) I got our 03-plate up to 60mpg
Having said that, I would recommend the Mondeo for the OP without reservation. Huge space, drove well and cost buttons in maintenance. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
Were those figures from the dashboard or by proper meeasurement? I had one of the last pre-DPF Mondeo diesels (2.0 Tdci 130 PS, 2006) and driving fairly sensibly I got an overall average of 42 mpg, with 53 mpg on a long run keeping to 60-65, and about 30 towing a caravan. That was from a spreadsheet I kept with every litre of fuel recorded. I noticed that the dash display was optimistic by about 3-4 mpg at all times. I am quite surprised that you averaged 50 mpg, and I never got as high as 60, even hypermiling.

Always calculated from fuel used between top-ups and actual mileage, never rely on the OBC. IIRC, someone else on here does/did similarly well in an older mondy......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
I'm having the same petrol vs. diesel debate myself. You're doing 10-12k miles per year with much of that long distance. Any modern diesel will be fine and I assume you don't want a 15 year old banger. It's all about personal choice; I have decided (and I may change my mind) to go for a Focus-sized car with a small, modern petrol engine. Not as economical as a modern diesel but I'll live with that. You could get a nice 1.5 Ecoboost Mondeo for £10-12k. You could also get a nice diesel one; it's up to you.0
