"obviously" I was looking for advice too on petrol v diesel. Hey good for you if your fit in fine with your dog's, but in the last few weeks, on occasions driving with 4 adults a child, buggy, bags etc, squashed is an understatement.

I'd guess various van based models would also do the job.

I wouldn't advise a diesel no matter what car you are buying, not with only a 30 mile trip a day

Plus most cities are pricing diesels out of them

And if I had children, I would be thinking a bit more about their health ( the above mentioned children were my partners, not mine, and they are grown up adults now )

I'd stick with petrol - you'll get more car for the money and aren't doing the miles to justify a diesel.

The amount of crap you need to carry with a new baby is incredible, but it does drop down over time.

Can't agree about not looking at a diesel - 15mile each way commute is plenty long enough (same as mine as it happens, and I've got a diesel Fusion).

Look for a pre-DPF Mondeo diesel, you should be able to average 50mpg out of one of them. When I took Mrs.G-J's to work for a fortnight (and only to work, no short runs) I got our 03-plate up to 60mpg :) Your commute plus the shorter trips should still give you 50, and loads of room for carting stuff around.

Oh, and you'd get around £11k or more change from your £12k budget ;)

For your budget you will be one or two NCAP generations behind on all of those cars. Which will put you on the wrong side of most of the proposed ULEZ zones in the UK and abroad.

Arklight, sorry to be correcting you twice in one day... ;) but, NCAP is only about car safety, as opposed to Euro emissions standards. So NCAP ratings won’t see the OP affected by ULEZ zones, while Euro rating will.

In practice, your point is probably correct, though. On a lower budget, the cars available will tend to not meet the latest Euro emissions standard and may limit use if ULEZs are an issue to the OP. Still possible, though to choose a car in that price-range with good NCAP rating, which a new parent is likely to want.

Depends on how modern a diesel you are after as with the current tech they need a bit more maintenace than old school diesels.

In terms of size plenty of choices cheap as chips are Skoda Yetis.
