Lowell - replicated B/Gas default

I had arrears on a British Gas account, I believed it had been paid off as I made installments over a number of months. It turns out, all the payments were put to the electricity account (wasnt in arrears & all payments showed as a credit and I was later refunded all payments).
British Gas confirmed they passed the matter to Lowell on 23rd January 2018, I was refunded above 10th April 2018, even after I told the adviser the payments were for arrears. I was unaware at this point the money was being put to the incorrect account.
Lowell starting chasing me for above payment, I told them that there was a mix up, I didnt owe British Gas anything, they had refunded me the said amount Lowell were chasing.
I am trying to tidy my credit file up, so just agreed to pay Lowell in November 2018. (Nothing from Lowell was showing on my credit file) it wasnt until I paid them in full, that they have marked a default in their name. So basically I have 2 defaults on my credit report for the same account, one from B/Gas and the other Lowell.
I think this is completely unfair, it is clear that the debt was being paid off and I think Lowell shouldnt duplicate a default.
Help! I'm desperate to clear defaults for a mortgage!

I had similar with Lowell. I called the original company and they admitted their mistake. They should have stopped reporting when it was sold. It was solved in one phone call. Give BG a call.0

If Lowell have taken over the debt then they are obligated to also report the account as in default.
The BG account should show as a zero balance and possibly closed/settled/satisfied0 -
I have exactly the same issue, defaulted with BG and Lowell bought the debt so I now have 3 defaults for the same debt0

The BG accounts should have a zero balance and the lowell account/s should now have the balance and the default applied from the date the BG account defaulted.
If so then this is all correct and above board.0 -
I can't see when the default was applied originally, all say settled 4/4/15 but Lowell are still chasing me for payments.0

I am making payments to them BG have said I have 6 defaults for 2 accounts. How can that be. Will it ever go off my account if the money still owed?0
-
You can only have one default per account.
It will drop off your file 6 years from the date of the initial default0 -
BG don't seem to be able to give me that info. I had one for gas and one from elec
Lowell bought the debt joined it bother and have issued a default as well for the above.0 -
They said they were still raising the default as the debt wasn't paid. So they sold it to Lowell in Feb 2018 and it would be 6 years from then
And now I have the one from Lowell. This only shows on Experian not the other 2cra0
