Eon confusion... Absolute nightmare!
Options
So this is my first post, I need some advice and this seems the most active place to ask. We moved into our new home the 26th April this year, a few days later we received a letter from Eon (previous occupiers energy supplier) there was no name on the letter just stated "to occupiers" and the letter stated that £15.40 was owed but usage was 0.00 for gas and electric as the property was empty from the 1st of April. We called to pay it but realised the bill was dated from the 1st upto the 26th April which ofc was the day we moved in. Called Eon and they said that the bill must be for previous occupants so refunded this with credit off of next bill. We are still having letters saying that we are now in debt and £5 per week will be added on to the amount and if not paid debt collectors will be forced to take action. We gave the letter to the previous occupants as Eon suggested we do this but now Eon have told the previous occupants that the bill is ours! I've contacted Eon again and still saying if we weren't in the house those dates we should ignore the letter and post them back. What are your thoughts?

Raise it as a formal complaint. It's from before you moved in, it's not your debt to pay.0

Thanks for the reply. I've contacted Eon numerous times, they never seem to know what they're doing. When it came to a refund one advisor told me I'd need to sign up to a new tariff before I could receive the refund... I don't think so, at this point I decided to switch suppliers as I felt I was talking to a brick wall with the Eon advisors I'd already dealt with. I've left Facebook messages too on Eons fb page this is when they told me it's not my debt but now are saying to the previous occupants that it is. I'll be calling them again tomorrow 😒.0

If it's new to you as a tenant then the landlord needs to pay. If you bought the place on 26th April the previous owner needs to pay. Give Eon the name of whoever is responsible.0

Did you actually set up your own account with Eon on the day you moved in or took over the property and give them the meter readings. Have you proof of the day you became responsible for the property (not necessarily the day you moved but the day you became the owners or tenants) If there was a gap between you moving in and the previous owners/occupiers moving out - who actually owned the property. If not you or the previous occupiers then it would be the landlord who is responsible
If you did set up your account with Eon when you became responsible, then there should be no confusion.
If you didn't, or tried to change suppliers without setting up an account with Eon then you've caused the problem yourself by not following the proper procedure.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Good morning Boho356 and welcome to the forum.
Agree with matelodave, it sounds like your account hasn't been set up properly and now you've changed supplier it's causing confusion.
If you speak to the home moves team they should be able to set up your account from the dates you took responsibility of the property.
They may need to see some evidence of the dates and they'll also need the meter reads that you took when you moved in.
Any charges from before these dates should be billed and sent to whoever was responsible before you.
Please do speak to us again.
Thank you

Thanks for the replies guys, Eon didn't actually give us the option to set up an account as far as I'm aware (my partner called). We have spoken to the previous landlord and he agrees that we shouldn't have to pay these charges so it looks like the bill was actually meant for him. We told Ron from day one that we were switching and switched to EDF a couple of days later. Eon have said they have received the meter readings from EDF and I would not need to supply Eon with these readings.0

Also let me add that this is our first home "the proper procedure" was never explained to us.0

Those of us in the know just know how it works. But often nobody takes the trouble to explain to first timers how it works.0
