Would you fit your own bathroom?

You mention a new shower to be installed. Is this "new for old" with pipework and electric already in situ, or a completely new shower? The reason I ask is that there are regulations relating to the wiring spec for a shower, which must be adhered to, and connection to the fusebox. In one of my houses this meant lifting floorboards and drilling holes in joists to take the high spec cable. Is this something your hubby can do? It's okay for him to lay the cable, but you must get a qualified electrician to connect to the consumer unit. If (heaven forbid) there's an electrical fault and the house is fire-damaged, the insurance company won't pay out because the shower wasn't installed by a professional.

Thank you both. I was not expecting it to be 3k for just fitting, for such a small room. How times change in 10 years haha. Its that long since we last had a new suite.

Ask friends and family if they have had a new bathroom fitted recently. Personal recommendation is superior to finding someone on the internet.

Thank you all for your replies.

If my hubby does any of the work it wont be anything electrical because we gave an electrician for that.

The shower is just being put in place of the old one but still a job for an electrician definitely.

We probably will go with a plumber. We have someone coming tonight and another layee in the week. I just hope we can get it a bit cheaper as its not a huge amount of work really other than the floor needing new boards and tiles.

    I've always done my own.
I need to be sure things are done correctly.

My hubby is quite handy but should I let him fit a bathroom? Lol. He wants to give it a go as he converted our home and added a 4th bedroom and new flat roof with no issues.

    Is this your only bathroom?

I'm not that good at DIY and I would probably have a go except that I'm in about the fourth year of an ongoing kitchen refit.

I've done several bathroom refits, totally gutted and replaced. When I started the internet was unheard of. Today people are totally spoiled with the amount of information they have access to.

Back when my Dad or I got tradesmen in I was impressed by the work. When I look at it now it looks so bad compared to the standard I achieve.

If he's done those other projects, he can certainly refit a bathroom.

If its your only toilet and you have young kids speed is the key, can you get the floor up and back down with the toilet back in working order in 1 day, 2 people or one who's done it a million times may do it faster.

Let him have a go if you were both happy with his previous DIY work, we all need to start somewhere and if it's your own home you'd have more control and knows what's going on. If there's anything you aren't happy afterwards, just get a handyman to sort out the final niggles, still save a of money.
