Can we change the occupants when we are renting?

My partner and myself are renting as a family. My partner is moving to another country for an year or more.
Meanwhile, can I share this flat with someone else so that I can bring my cost down?
Will the estate agents/owner allow this? Anything else that I should be aware of?
If and when my partner comes back, I would like to change the tenancy again.
I would be grateful for any advise. Thank you.
Best Regards,

Yes you can, you would just be taking in a lodger, you would only be sub letting if you were also moving out.
I wouldn't bother with getting the tenancy agreement changed now or in the future, just leave it as you and your partner and you can come up with your own lodgers agreement for the lodger you take in. This way if things don't work out you can ask them to leave, with a tenancy you'd be stuck with them.0 -
It is not subletting it is a lodger. However, it may still require permission. Check your tenancy agreement.0

We had informed estate agents date of vacating and we postponed the date by month and they agreed.
Now, if I go back to then saying I would like to continue here or would like to share with lodger etc. would they object?
Would estate agents like frequent change of tenants or they like a tenant to stay long term? What about the actual owners?
Apologies if I am asking stupid questions. I am relatively new to UK and still trying to understand all these.
Many thanks for all the help.0 -
You can get a lodger if you want, no need to inform anyone. My partner and myself are renting as a family. My partner is moving to another country for an year or more.

What does the tenancy agreement say about other people living there? Apologies but I can't read it from here...
You CAN change occupants but depending on the tenancy agreement MAY need landlord's permission. But there's not much they can do other than evict you at end of current tenancy period.
Bit like you CAN drive at 123mph on the M4 but MAY not.0 -
I will check the tenancy agreement.
How and where can I post about lodgers to share ?0 -
Do not get more than one lodger.0

May I know why please?
Does it not depend on number of bedrooms etc?0
