while i am having a joke i do think they are needless. whats wrong with a road atlas? they are alot cheaper, they dont direct you into a river and they dont increase the liklihood of your car being broken into by a million percent.
  • I've had a TomTom for over 2yrs now & wouldn't go on long journeys without it & yes I can actually read a map too, I have one in the car as well.

ipaq from ebay (around £100 6515) or newer, running tomtom software
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
  • one should always have a map in the car anyway for backup or what ever

though the OP has asked for suggestions on what to buy not an argument so lets stick to that!

The absolute cheapest way to do it is to buy a sat nav that runs Windows CE so you can hack it and run the tomtom software on it - but it's a terrible fiddle tbh.

People here seem very anti Navman here
I've just bought a second hand ICN 330 for £29 with 2006 maps and it took me up to Yorkshire & North Wales last week with no problems
I think you have to understand the difference between Fasted & shortest route
Shortest will take you up narrow little lanes - if you let it! But it's just a tool & you can ignore the recommended route if you want to & it will rapidly recalculate

Thanks for all your replies - I did have a good giggle at the map link - thanks. Do have one of those too.

I am dead confused now. The one on Ebuyer looks good and a great price but I wonder whether we should stretch to the Tom Tom. You're all anti Navman but I have read some great reviews on the S30 and on MSN cars it's listed as a best buy.

Really not helping myself am I? I am notorious for not being able to make a decision.

    Hope that helps

I don't have one. Still too expensive for me. I think there usefulness comes in the last few miles of a journey to a new address.

Right, am officially down to 2 choices - the Navman F20 with TMC kit thingy or the MyGuide one.

I know you're all anti Navman but I have read some good reviews and AutoExpress rated it.

I cannot find the TMC kit anywhere for the MyGuide to buy online so have emailed the manufacturer but if I can get that too I'll probbaly go for the MyGuide.

Tom Tom is a bit too pricey compared to these and it doesn't do much else!

    Cheers for all your replies!
