Mileage out of sequence on used car
Hi everyone,
This is a topic that has been discussed a few times but wanted some fresh opinions on this particular situation.
I'm looking to buy a used car and obviously ran a couple of background checks on it. HPI doesn't report anything suspicious, just that "No mileage discrepancy is currently indicated by the National Mileage Register (NMR)."
By running an experian background check however something interesting popped up. The results are as below:
RMI MIL'GE 2/9/2016 - 11,637
BVRLA 2/9/2016 - 11,637
BVRLA 3/9/2016 - 9,203
This looks like an attempt from someone to correct an erroneous entry? As I doubt someone would clock the car and capture the mileage before and after... but then again I'm totally inexperienced with buying cars...
I visited the dealer and checked the paperwork available. It seems that the car was supplied to the first owner via Motability and that's why BVRLA is involved.
I was able to see that on 2/9/16 the car was serviced at Robins & Day and their report shows about 9,180 miles (very close to the number supplied but not bang on). There's also another document from Motability themselves, that say the car was serviced on 2/9/16 in Robins & Day and the mileage was 11,637.
It seems that this is a case of human error, and I believe the car hasn't been tampered with, but I am concerned if this discrepancy will have any impact if I tried to sell the car?
When asked the dealer about it he said he hadn't noticed the discrepancy, that it's a clear case of human error, and he would have bought the car himself nevertheless.
Any opinions?

if you are concerned move onto the next vehicle offering.0

I'd be more interested in the mileage now and the vehicles condition than fretting over a minor discrepancy nearly three years ago. I assume the vehicle will have had its first MOT by now does that show anything adverse?0

I personally believe this is just human error when completing a form and I would buy the car, however I'm inexperienced with these kinds of transactions and I'd like to know if I'm signing up to any risks
Any purchase for goods or services is a risk, you asked for opinion in your opening post.
There is no point then preaching.
Some internet strangers could say walk away (and it turns out a good buy) some may say ignore and go for it (it could turnout to be a lemon).
YOU have to do what you are comfortable doing.0 -

Thank you for your response.
Milage is low and MOTs didn't show anything of concern, just regular stuff - brake pad replacements etc0 -

I don't mean to argue, but this wasn't my point. I know about risks and outcomes could vary. All I'm asking for is opinions on whether this discrepancy I uncovered is something to worry about or not, as I've never bought a used car before so I don't know what to look out for :beer:0 -

In practice though what discrepancy is 2-3K miles?
As another poster said that was 3 years ago, what has the car been doing since then?
Again there are other cars around without a mileage discrepancy for you to be concerned with, it's all about what it means to YOU.
Out of interest what colour is the car?0 -

The car is black in colour and I can't see anything else concerning about it, based on my limited experience0 -

I assume the MOT mileages don't suggest anything "funny" about September 2016? (That's provided there was a MOT before September 2016).
EDIT: excuse my ignorance, but where would Experian get the mileage figures referred to in #1, and why would they differ from HPI - except for some sort of clerical/input error?
EDIT2: And if you resold it, would a buyer look beyond HPI?0
