Morrison’s do individual sponge puddings that say they can be steamed as well as microwaved. They have good reviews although I have no clue about sell by dates. Not sure they are particularly new though.Mortgage and debt free0

VfM4meplse wrote: »Cake in a tin can is just so very wrongIf you say so. But I'm talking about pudding, and when there's no power, all you have to cook on is a wood stove, you're not feeling very well and you fancy a substantial hot pud - not chocolate, not cake, but a pudding -
I was also going to add, the same as a reply above. Though it's some years since I was last in there, Morrisons used to do tinned sponge puddings in a few different flavours.0 -
Now I want steamed pudding
Ocado have ones you can steam, so you could do them in a saucepan but presumably you couldn't just chuck them into boiling water? I assumed you would need to keep the top out of the water.

Thanks folks but those in Morrison's and Waitrose that are meant to be microwaved don't appeal 'cos by our standards they're expensive for the amount you get.
There is somebody still doing proper tinned sponge puds though - they're branded "Bestone" or "BestOne" and are apparently under £1.50 a go. Only problem is I can't find anybody who sells them! We're all doomed0 -
Are you sitting down? Not subject to any awkward heart condition you're aware of? Someone within yelling distance should said condition manifest & able to gain entry?
Right.
You have to buy wholesale.
Bestway who produce the original Bestone Syrup Sponge Pudding PM £1.39 right here
Or our old mate Amazon & again you have to buy a small pallet.
I think the upsides are they exist, & that there is also a chocolate version - for a given value of chocolate, & I think I've decided what I'll line Himself's Christmas stocking with.
Off the shelf, you may do best to phone a bestway wholesaler & ask who's buying these & what is the delivery address?! Likely in flying breach of data security etc but slightly less money up front & more brazen cheek.0 -
Hmmmm. Yes, well ...
Surely there must be a shop somewhere that actually sells these? Far as I know, most convenience shops are tied to specific wholesalers, so maybe market traders flog these?
Dunno. I've just emailed the nearest Bestway depot to see if they can give me a clue where I might find some on a shelf in a shop, but I have a feeling that that Amazon deal at twice the marked price per tin's going to be the only way forward.
We shall see. If I get a reply, I'll report backWe're all doomed0 -

You're right that they are hugely expensive for the tiny portion sizes but the ones I saw in Waitrose definitely said they could be steamed.
When I had the children at home and needed to fill them up I often made suet or sponge puddings with jam or syrup . They are really quick and easy. Out of interest, why don't you want to make your own / buy a microwave? :think:0 -

Because when the power is out, she's cooking on the wood fired stove
Its what us country folk have to do now and then, over head power lines tend to fail when the wind picks up
We had 7 days with no power one year, if we didn't have the stove we would have froze and starved ( well maybe not but you get the idea)0 -
