Vueling diverted us to Barcelona

Options
How do I go about compensation. Flight to Alicante was diverted last minute mid air, to Barcelona. We waited in Barcelona airport for 6 hours for a bus which then took another 7 hours to reach Benidorm. It was a nightmare. No one knew what was going on at Barcelona. No reps to direct 300 people. There was so many people frustrated shouting rowing & kicking off. It was just awful. :(

what was the reason for the diversion? Airlines tend not to divert by choice as it causes an absolute nightmare for them.

If the airport was closed there was not a lot the airline could do. I would expect an eu261 claim to be rejected but worth checking euclaim and bottonline for their view. Does your travel insurance cover delays?
  • Sounds completely like "exceptional circumstances"

A plane load of people turning up unexpectedly at any airport is going to be a logistics nightmare for any company.

You just cannot "magic" transport out of thin air, they did get you to your destination, albeit with a serious delay.

As above, travel insurance may cover it.

It would undoubtedly be classed as an Extraordinary Circumstance (EC). But they would fail the 'all reasonable measures' test imo as they took 13 hours to transport the passengers to their destination.

The airport was was only closed for 2.5 to 3hrs, plus, most airlines diverted to an airport much closer to Alicante, such as Valencia.
