Thank you for all your helpful advice.
I looked at Google photo’s on my phone - didn’t realise I had it and all the photo’s are there. They are also on my PC. Presumably in/on iCloud as well. Have to say though that is over the top of my head how it all works!
Sorry another question. I’d like to leave a few photo’s on my phone but is there an easier way to do this other than going through one by one and deleting please? Thank you again.

If you didn't realise that Google was copying them for you, then I would recommend you make a safety copy of all of them, before deleting any.

Google may take your delete command and delete them from the cloud, too... leaving you with no copy.

Probably easiest to delete them all and then copy back the ones you want on it.
Delete, in Google Photos deletes from both the device and the cloud. I believe the "archive" function will delete from the phone, but retain them in the cloud. Check that's correct, don't take my word for it.

P.S. I think deleted photos are retained in the "bin" for 30 days. Again, check that, don't take my word.

Best way is; click on 'free up space' in google photos app.

This will only delete photos on your device that has been backed up.

Being doing this for a long time with no issues or accidental deletes

As I said earlier (post #6), this doesn't work for me ... even though my photos are backed up (I can see them online via web browser) I get an error trying to use this function.
    Can't free up space

Use 'free up space' when items are backed up and can be removed from your device

Make sure back up & sync is switched on in Google photos app settings
