iPhone on o2 last day of warranty redused repair

Options
Could anyone tell me if they have come across this or indeed if this is lawful. My sons home button on his iPhone 8 stopped working. I took it into the o2 store where it was purchased to be repaired on the last day of the 12 month warranty. The staff said that by the time it reached the workshop after the bank holiday it would be outside the 12 month warranty and so they may refuse to repair it. I said that isn't fair as I have brought it to you within the warranty period. They said they would send it off and see. Sure enough they refused to repair it saying it was outside of the warranty period and quoted £270 for repair. We requested the phone to be returned and once it was I contacted O2 repairs who stated that the phone has to be recieved in their workshop within the 12 months. I asked if this was stated anywhere in the paperwork as I was not aware of this fact and did not get an answer. I have had a look on their website and can't see any reference to it. Is this right?

  • !!!!!!!!. I took my iPhone 7 to John Lewis on the last day of the 2 year warranty and it was sent off to repair without any quibble whatsoever. I received a refurbed (looked like brand new) iPhone 7 a few weeks later.
Everyone needs to stop buying brand-new phones from places that only offer a 1 year warranty when there are alternatives. 2 years is the minimum a smart phone should last.
Heck, even CEX offer 2 year warranties on their second hand phones.
