Credit Card Problem Please Advise asap

Options
Hi MSE, I am in a real pickle over a recent CCard application that I was granted and I activated the card but was never used. I was given the wrong type of agreement basically as I only wanted purchases from MBNA yet they ignored my requests and gave me the BTransfer type.

We was due to go on holiday in July with this arraignment with a healthy good credit rating they decided a £7200 limit. But what I was applying for was "29mnths" interest free on purchases, this wasn't what they was issued.

I only realized at the last minute just after the activating the card that this wasn't what I had applied for.

I called them to explain but was refused point blank my request for purchases only.
With this I was extremely frustrated and decided to cancel all and make a complaint.

I then tried to reapply with someone else and got refused.
So decided to try and make amends by going back but to no avail, credit was dropped from 7200£ to 200£ even after cancelling the complaint.

Any sensible advice would be greatly appreciated.
thank you in advance.
Kev

ps this all happen last week 29 and 30th may and I have never posted before so please bare this in mind.

If the card isn't suitable for your needs, apply for one that is. If rejected again, leave it a few months.

Keep the MBNA card at least until you've found another.

Hi, we move threads if we think they’ll get more help elsewhere (please read the forum rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

I’ve moved your thread from the ‘I wanna’ board to the ‘Credit Cards’ board, where it is better suited.

I doubt it. Either you applied for the wrong type of card or they made an error.

Not very nice of them,. Did they say why? After all if you explained that an error had been made somewhere and you had no balance to transfer and therefore this promotional offer was useless to you, I don't understand their dismissive attitude or the point blank refusal..,

You say you cancelled the card. So what actually happened when you called them? Did they offer to re-open the account you had closed with a reduced credit limit of £200. or was it a new application to them that resulted in the lower credit limit? Very odd.

There is no 29 month Purchase card.

There is a 28 month Transfer and Purchase card; MBNA All Round 28/28 Credit Card

29 month interest free is a BT card.
Enjoy 0% interest for 29 months when you transfer your existing card debt to MBNA’s longest balance transfer deal.

lists the alternatives. Anything from the Lloyds group is obviously off the table for you.

You shouldn't be in a pickle in order to pay for a holiday. If you are taking one of these cards, it is likely you have an outstanding balance, but you also anticipate making purchases on the card...and then hope to pay it off over the years. Not a good state of play, living beyond your means.

They don't give out the cards to anyone. It's a risk giving a card to someone who already has a debt and wants to borrow even more.

So throwing your toys out of the perambulator has obviously made them think that you are not adult enough to cope with mildly adverse outcomes.

Maybe you'll have more luck with the Santander card. Not a bad choice if you intend to use it on holiday, since there are no forex charges on purchases abroad. So you could go some way to recouping the £3 monthly charge from that and the fact that there is no fee for balance transfers. In addition to that they offer 0.5% cashback.
So arguably the best card for you anyway.

I have no outstanding balance nor any other credit cards but was offered to join friends for their second week with my son to Egypt next month at late notice for an all inclusive 5* package at a cost of 1400£ which I dont have the funds for in one go so decided to go for a purchase card only and spread the costs over 28 months or even less. It was to pay for a holiday only purposes nothing else.

Really needed to read that not.

This comment I find is harsh, I am 48 a full time single father to my son since he was 2yrs old and as this was an a brilliant opportunity to take my 9yr old on a dream holiday that I feel I can quite comfortably afford if I had some more time to pay for it yet never had the confidence to take such a risk just all on our own.

Please advise me and not judge me. I am on here for help so please......

Now when I applied for this card it was strictly for the purchases only basis but obviously being non experienced in this field I applied for purchases however on completion MBNA are saying my agreement is only with transfers and money transfers. I may have made an error or MBNA did but either way is was not what I required so I cancelled. Two days passed I tried elsewhere and was refused.

So being inexperienced I tried to reverse the cancellation and was told I couldn't as the account is now closed and this is when they dropped a credit from 7200£ to £200

Meantime I was advised with a few calls back and forth from last week until Sunday they could reinstate the account if I was to drop my complaint. This neither happened and I m back to square one.

Was suppose to fly on the 23rd July.

I told my son this morning and he was devastated with the sad news.

I had a call from the complaints team today to say that they are really sorry about this and would be sending me all the details from the complaints department and my next move would be to the financial ombudsman.
I requested a letter of cancellation and was told it would be in the post today 2nd class. He mentioned as the account was cancelled before the end of the month the the credit report would of be sent out to the credit agencies as they send at the end of each month.

All I would like to know is....is this true? How soon could I reapply? Whats the chance I could keep my son's dream alive?

Will this effect my credit rating as it was well above the average and at a good score.

Any help or positive advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Any judgmental comments gladly refused.

    Many thanks in advance.
    Regards Kev & Oliver

Because I had cancelled the card they couldn't reinstate the credit limit as they said the account is now closed

You should apply for a card as soon as possible if you need it to fund this holiday.

Your rating and score aren't used in lending (as they're largely just made up and only provided to you for entertainment value) - you'll be relying on your credit history and circumstances being good enough to be accepted.

An eligibility checker may give you a better guide.
