Eurowings Flight delayed/cancelled

1.2K Posts

After some advice please (apologises if in the wrong area)
A mate was/is at Alicante airport this morning (3/6/19) for a flight to Dussledorf then to Manchester
The flight was scheduled for 09:45 departure, it was delayed several times until 14:20 before being cancelled at about 15:40
Now is where the advice/help is required
Despite efforts to contact Eurowings via phone or Skype with little success
And with no actual airline desk just servisair to assist for onward flight assistance back to the UK
My mate has booked his own Easyjet direct flight back to liverpool tonight at 23.35
So he has been at Alicante airport since 07.00 for a 09.45 flight
Where does he stand with Eurowings compensation for his flight home
Also from what I've been told the crew boarded the flight but a shirt while later it was cancelled
There is talk of the original flight being diverted to Barcelona due to a medical emergency, so I'm guessing g the crew may have run out of hours
He also needs to be home tomorrow for work so after being left in the airport for the best over 5 hours with little or no assistance, he's sorted his own flight home
Any advice please would be appreciated
Thanks

Where does he stand in as much as he got his own flight home
And not any Eurowings possible hotel (very little contact from them all day) and not their flight the next day assuming this was later sorted
Very little assistance offered from the servisair desk at Alicante
stating no compensation is due as it was a medical emergency
The emergency was the result in the inward bound flight delay
I'm assuming the crews hours could be the result of the cancellation
although the plane was air side several hours before the cancellation was confirmed
any advice please
